Had a bummer of a new years day. Discovered that someone broken to my shed. They did not get any Festool tools. But they got a lot of non-festool stuff.  Several power tools lawn equipment and saw blades etc. So far it is only about $3000, but that is enough to ruin your day.

All the police do is give you a case number.

In my opinion, however humble it may (or may not) be, there's no one lower than one that steals the tools a man needs to make an honest living.  Hope you have insurance, Greg.

Bummer, really sorry to hear that. I know how it feels. I used to lose $2000+ every year from jobsite and truck theft. Stopped filing police reports years ago. Just didn't matter. Looked into the insurance a couple times, would have run about the same as the annual loss.

Sorry to hear that.  [sad] One of the reasons why I keep all my tools in the house. I wouldn't call that "only" though, $3000 is a mayor @#%%#$$@#%!!!!

Happened to me once too. Someone broke in our garden shed. He stole a shoe box full of bicycle repair stuff and a shoe box with shoe polish. He left the two €500 bicycles and the collection of booze alone.  ??? Dunno what the thief was on but he must have had some mayor trip that night.

We have insurance, but I just raised the deductible to $1,000 in October. Bummer  [unsure] So we will get part of the loss back. Good news is, it is a replacment value insurance policy.

When I replace the tools they will be stored in the garage, which is more secure then the shed. Thats were all the Festools are stored.

Aren't you afraid its not worth the 2000.00 in case they raise the rates on you?

After my house fire which was not my fault and working with the insurance company 24 months fighting I personally would not risk it. I learned a lot of about how they operate and its anything but fair and impartial.

I just got a new van last week and its costing me a fortune just to keep thieving ****s out.  Fitted a steel bulkhead, getting a alarm fitted, Limpet locks on back and side doors and fitting a van-vault inside..

John....,

Sorry about the break-in. A long time ago i got cleaned out, twice!!!!    It is the worse feeling.

Well, look at the bright side,Now you get to buy all new tools.

Sorry to hear about the break in.  Hopefully the rest of the year will turn out much better!

Bummer of a day man I hope the guy chokes on the stuff he got.  I have quite a bit of tools now and machinery and and after a review of my insurance by my agent found that there were special riders needed to get up over 2500 in value for tools.  I had tons of insurance but special limits on tools, jewels (no issue there) and guns.  I had to add a special rider to cover the increased amount of tools.  It cost me about 30 bucks a year, but I would have been upset when I needed it and they said oops sorry your over your limit.

I also agree, at least 100%...

I got cleaned out while out of town on business several years ago. They took everything, including my dirty underwear. I lost all my tools, which included inheritances and stuff that you just couldn't get any more.

I lived in Houston at the time and the police had no intention of trying to catch anyone. It was infuriating because I knew who did it. The old guy across the street saw it happen but didn't snap until he came over to collect my mail and found the TV remote at the end of the driveway. He was sick at the time and wasn't thinking very well...

I told the investigating officer, who actually came out to the house, that I knew who did it. While walking around the house with him, I noticed their lighter on the floor and pointed out that it would have their fingerprints. His response was to grab the lighter, light it, say, "cool lighter", and stick it in his pocket. Then he told me that if I wanted any of my stuff back, to go to all the pawn shops.

I was incensed!

I suspect there must be good police forces somewhere but that incident didn't make me think that the fourth largest city in the nation was included in the list of those that have one. I don't know why they would even send someone out. I guess it's dangerous to approach actual known criminals, while racing around in an overpowered car to pull over relatively law abiding citizens is pretty safe.

Tom - your experience mirrors mine.
Was robbed with wife at home! Brick house so she did not hear him going through my carport shed but saw him on his last trip out. Called the cops but they did not want to come until I insisted that I had to have a report to file on my insurance. Wife identified the car and great discription of guy. Absolutely no follow up. All in a little town of 5000 people. Cops had no interest at all. They wrote up the report claiming  it was my fault for not having better security.

Another example. House alarm went off next door. Called cops - 1 mile from station to my house. Cop showed up 1 hour 20 minutes later. When I asked why so long his reponse was - "You didn't expect me to show up while they were still here did you?"

My house *almost* got broken into a few years ago.  Some crackheads broke into my neighbour's house, stole some stuff, then broke our back window with a rock.  I'm not sure if the alarm scared them away or not, but they didn't enter and I didn't lose anything (except the window).

The cops came, took a report, and then a few days later called me back to saying they had caught the people and they needed more information to continue with pressing charges.  I live in Toronto.

On the other hand...

One day I was driving my two toddlers home from daycare.  Traffic was moving slowly and was stop-and-go.  At one stoppage I noticed a couple of guys who seemed to be arguing a little on the side of the street and I happened to watch for a few seconds.  Traffic started moving, so we did too.  Then I heard "pop-pop-pop-pop-pop", and I realized it was gunfire.  I looked to the side of the road and saw two guys running alongside my car.  They hopped into a car and then pulled right in front of me to do a U-turn, but were stuck for a few seconds.  I got a good look at their faces.  While this is happening another car swerves out into traffic and drives away through an intersection in the *wrong lane* against traffic.

Now I happened to have a camera in hand, and I knew somebody may have been hurt.  I knew that if I took a picture of the plate of the car, or the people in the car U-turning ahead of me, it might help the cops nab a suspect.  But I started thinking about my kids, and what could happen if they saw me with a camera, so I put away my camera and just tried to remember the plate # as best I could.  The car took off.

When they left, I made a u-turn back to the scene.  A grocer had been shot dead.  There was one cop at the scene already.  I told him what I saw and what I could recollect of the license plate.  I never received even a follow-up phone call.  To my knowledge the case remains unsolved.  It did receive a lot of front-page attention.

Hell, the damn cops are part of the problem!!!  My tools were ripped off by a cop INSIDE a police precinct in DC years ago when I worked for the phone company.  I caught the bastard laughing about it with his colleagues when he didn't see me coming up fast and hard behind him.  It got pretty ugly pretty quickly, and I got all my tools back on the spot - out of his desk drawer.  You'd think that one's tools might be safe in a PD.  Not any more.  They're just legally armed banditos/bullies.

Started the process with the insurance company today. The want forms filled out, and them more forms.... [sad]

The worst part of the forms for me was detailing everything that was stolen. I'm lucky I have a good memory...

Something pops-up missing every time I go to the shed to get something.
