Shop finds

I was painting an old sash window last week, and needed to clean the paint off the glass where I missed with the tape. I looked everywhere for the razor blade scraper, gave up, and drove down to the local orange box store to get another one.

Started in on another project this week and found two more. I swear they weren't there when I looked for them before.

Just before this thread started I had to order another accessory scraper for my LS 130 to replace the new one I have that has somehow disappeared from my basement.  So do you think it went to another dimension, soon to magically reappear at a later date?  [eek]

It will mystically re-appear about 20 minutes after you unwrap the replacement part.  If you listen quietly, you may hear muffled giggling in the background when you find the original part...  [big grin]

Yes, that's happened often before!  And I do have to say that while searching the other day, I came across three tape measures I couldn't find last week and a pair of flush cutters I forgot about!  [big grin]

I searched for 2 days for the air hose for the VacuPress. Ordered a replacement, used it the day it arrived, then went to put it away where I'd never lose it... wait, what's there? oh, the previous hose.

Missing pieces and accessories are one reason that Systainers that hold the tool and all attachments are great! Or an add on accessory Sys that attaches to the tool Sys.

Then be sure to put the stuff back in the Systainer when you are done.

In the last two months I have lost:
  • 2 Swiss Army knives (I had two because I could only ever find one at a time.....)
  • 1 Utility Knife
  • 1 Check Book
  • 2 watch caps
  • Several rolls of tape
I now have replaced the Swiss Army knives.
Still looking for the Utility Knife.
Check book is still MIA
The watch caps reappeared at some unknown point (I suspect Molly the GoldenDoodle was involved in that particular caper) ;D
I currently have several rolls of tape, not sure if they are replacements or the originals.....

My head is still firmly attached; the mind continues to wander about freely making occasional cameo appearances......

It’s a constant problem. It’s why I have at least one tape measure in nearly every room in the house. My wife has noticed and said “Why don’t you consolidate them in one place?”  [tongue]

Working in my shop requires first playing a game of 3D Tetris. Everything smaller enough to fit on a shelf but can’t find a space is stacked on dolly’s. I try to keep the footprint equal to the Sys Dolly. There are five Sys Dolly’s with about 7 feet of Systainer on each one. (Not all Festools)

Sometimes it’s more efficient to go buy another thing than to bring the specific Systainer that already has one of those things front and center.

I have repeatedly lost a nice little folding Felco tree saw with a red plastic handle.  I only use it a once a year, my brain is somehow convinced that the handle is black and more than once when I go-a-looking I will glance right over it  in its usual spot because the saw is red and I'm looking for a black one - DUH!

Inter-dimensional tools are a thing.  I've come to that conclusion many times.

I find one of the bad offenders are tools like levels, since you have a habit of setting them on something and leaving it there, and forgetting it. say on top of something above your head. Levels with magnets are bad too.  I've had many a small level disapear for weeks just to re-appear on the side of a metal electrical box.

One thing about buying lots of tape measures, pencils, pens, sharpies is while you think it means you will have one handy, it just means you leave them in one spot because to know you have one in another spot where you are going. Works good until you forget and take one with you, now there are 2 at the other location and so on and so forth this gets worse. Now you have no tape measures/pencils/sharpies but in one place there is a pile of 5 tapes, 3 pencils and 14 sharpies that have dried out with the cap off because you just set it down for a second.

For tools, this gets to the heart of Systainers, all the bits and bobs in one box including spares, or tools needed for the tools.  For non-festool stuff I put everything in systainers and stock each one with the tools it needs, so if it needs some other thing like a screw driver or a wrench, I buy one and put it in there with it. No more tearing the play apart to find the spanner for an angle grinder or a wrench for a router, every tool gets the stuff it needs in a systainer.

I bought a spare Bosch dust extractor hose a couple of years ago and stashed it away.  I've looked for it several times since, no dice.  Finally a few days ago I found it stuffed into an extra systainer that I had stashed right beside my bench.  Doh!

I too misplace tape measures and have a habit of leaving them here and there so they are always at hand.  A few years ago, Stanley had a Home Depot promotion with hats and tape measures for $15-20 each.  In late January Home Depot still had half of them left, so the local store put them on sale for $1 each.  I bought seven or eight, and I'm sure I've used them all.

Like I always ( at least when I’m looking for something) a day is not complete unless you are looking for something.

Same issue with cheaters. I must have 5 pair of cheater glasses around the house and shops, plus a pair in each truck.

OK, you are right  [member=1619]SRSemenza[/member]  or should I call you Mr. Organized!  [not worthy]    [big grin]

The first place I looked was the systainer with the tool.  Now, if only I had remembered to put it in there when I bought it!    [doh]

We've been missing a serving spoon.  This afternoon my wife was working out in the raised flower beds.  We are no longer missing the serving spoon....... [cool]

So what you are saying is you lost your label machine.    [tongue]

think I need bigger labels and not to forget to relabel contents after I move stuff around

My most commonly replicated tool are Vice Grips. Every time I've moved, and I've had to move a lot for my career, if I can't find a pair of Vice Grips, I go buy another pair. Then, about eight years ago I was in one place long enough to unpack and organize my workshop, and discovered half a dozen pairs.  [unsure]

At that last unpacking I invested in a large supply of The Container Store clear plastic bins. Now, even though I'm without a shop right now, I can see what I have in the bins. So no more Vice Grips for me.
