Sliding dovetails and dovetails

I have read that cutting the tongue for a sliding dovetail joint with a handheld router is not recommended. I currently own a 1400 and would not like to purchase a table router setup. So, has anyone had success cutting the tongue with a handheld router and, if yes, what technique was used?
