Yikes!  It's happened already; placed my first order for some Festools today (Rotex 150 and CT22 package).

I'm a hobbyist and must admit I'm one of those folks who first became aware of the Festool line of tools via This Old House.  Didn't realize watching a TV show could be so expensive....

The amount and quality of information available on this forum is amazing (as is the willingness of so many members to share their knowledge).  I've been lurking on FOG for the past couple weeks or so and if my wife ever finds out she'll be totally upset about it; my continued involvement here can only lead to a full blown addiction requiring regular fixes of green and black....  :)

Welcome to the downward spiral my friend.  Anybody that loves their tools, is bound to find their way here!

Dave,

Welcome aboard!

Yes, it is a slippery slope and and spousal buyin is a critical component.    Like Matthew wrote above, salesmanship is a critical component to success.  Make sure that you emphasize all of the benefits that SHE wil receive if you buy more Festools!    ;D

Make sure that you post pics of your project here on FOG.  Remember the cardinal rule - No pics?  Didn't happen!

Regards,

Dan.

Here are some ideas that have worked well for me:
(1) Start making a list of improvements you can accomplish around the home that she's been asking for.  Do a really good job, emphasize the before-and-after scenarios, and make sure to tell her how essential it is to have  Festool tools in order to accomplish each goal!
(2) Think of gifts you can make for friends and family.  You'd be surprised how happy people are to receive "simple" woodworking projects like cutting boards and boxes.  Make a few of those, and your wife will soon recognize the value of having gifts taken care of during those stressful times of year.  Plus, every time you visit friends and family who have received one of these gifts, they'll take out the cutting board and everyone will "ooh" and "ahh" and ask you how you did it.  Here's your chance to tell everyone present how essential it is to have Festool tools in order to accomplish the goal!
(3) Think of a friend who has another expensive hobby (like golf) and emphasize that he/she is nowhere near as productive as you are.  Use every opportunity to emphasize the difference to your house and home between you and your friend.  Note: for (3) to work, you must accomplish (1) and (2) first!  Also, this becomes more difficult if you are also a golfer!!
(4) OPTIONAL: If your wood shop is connected to the living area, talk about how unhealthy it is for dust to make its way into the home.  And once again, emphasize how essential it is to have Festool tools in order to accomplish this goal!

Matthew-

That's a great list of ideas!  I'm sensing a theme running through that list....  I especially like #4 since I'm actually in the beginning stages of thinking about adding a workshop as connected space to our house.  Thanks for the welcome.

Ha!  How many flowers you suppose it takes for a CT22 & Rotex 150?

Dave

Dan, thanks for the URL help. The brackets work when using Apple Mail, but I guess not here.

Actually, I never had to rely on flowers to be "allowed" to buy tools, but it's still nice to give them, just in case. After building two houses and all the cabinets & millwork that goes in them, raising five children & maintaining a wife, each with their own furniture wish lists, nobody here has ever questioned my tool purchases. In return, I know enough not to question the growing clothes & shoe collection that finally squeezed me out of our closet last year; I just made myself an armoire. And never, NEVER brag about your tool acquisitions either. Never push you're luck. Some of my tools were even suggested by or given by my children. Life is good. But still, don't forget the flowers.. Mother's Day is a great time to buy Festool.. Hell, I even give her flowers on Father's Day...

Festool has to do some better product promotion and learn ways to overcome the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor). Subtle yet suggestive promotional marketing chachkies should flow to every Festool enthusiast's maibox on a regular basis with ads for new tools.  A Festol tee-shirt certainly would be highly noticable to the wife each laundry day.

When shopping, my wife is one who appreciates purchasing "the set" even if we needed only one. You know, a new "set of dishes", or a "set of towels", or a "set of figurines", etc.. A "set" of new Festools should be easy with a little encouragement help??? ;D

I better stop here, I've probably already maxed out my future time allotnent in purgatory?  :-\
