Slots Screws, Phillips screws and MORE screws

I knew there were several different types of screw heads and drivers, but never realized how many there were until I read this article:

Plus I did not know that most of the drives we use today were invented in the early 1900's

Interesting read. Some of the more obscure ones are really bizarre.

It still amazes (and frustrates!) me the number of people, including a great many tradesmen, who don't know the difference betweeen Phillips and Pozidriv screws, and continually use the wrong driver, damaging either the bit or the screws.

It drives me nuts (no pun intended).

Sadly, I have encountered almost ALL on the list due to a weird cross usage among car makers and the electronics that are inside of their products. I had forgotten the Reed & Prince screws, and never knew the name of the Frearson screw, but knew it was NOT like a Phillips.  I also now know about the strange Japanese screw , JIS B 1012, with its single dot or x mark on the head. Makes sense, could never get a regular Phillips to work with these... [embarassed]
A classic case of needing one of THAT screwdriver would be someone's tape deck or CD player with a jammed Disc or tape in it. Someone begs you to take apart their unit to save that ohh so special mix tape or home burned disc that their kid made for them before you send the now inop unit out for repair and don't expect to get any jammed media from the repair shop when they ship the radio or player back to the parts dept. after servicing it....  [embarassed]
The bottom line is that the automotive world uses way too many fastener types in my humble opinion. Of course the bit driver people would disagree...  [big grin]
