Smart Phones

What is great for you is that there are tons of choices.

I have the iPhone and find it okay after it was jailbroken. Many of my co-workers have the Droid X (some rooted and some not) and I find the larger screen much more enjoyable to use, and not that bad to carry around.  In general, I HATE using softkeys, but live with it with the hopes of it getting better.

I think if I were to choose right now, I would go with an Android based phone just for the flexibility, though I do think that the Apple iOS is a much more stable and less glitchy system.

Here's another piece of contradictory Verizon info.  I got an email very early this morning telling me my iphone shipped already via UPS arriving Monday.  Like I previously posted, they originally said we couldn't pre-order until 3am, yet at 2:50am it showed I could and I did + they said it would ship out for all pre-orders 2/10 arriving 2/11 via Fed Ex.  Sounds like they're talking out of both sides of their mouth.  Who knows what else will be different by the time we all get it and use it?  I'm not at all surprised reading the info Chris posted after this latest stuff.

Ken,

If the iPhone is actually being shipped from Apple then it will come Fedex.  It takes two days out of China.  If Verizon has them in stock, then it might be actually coming UPS.

Yes Peter, I get what you're saying, but I was pointing out that they're giving out 2 sets of information for things, not that I'm not happy getting it sooner, just kind of wondering what info to trust from them anymore and what other surprises are waiting to pop up.  I just want to see all the strings attached to my purchase with this new V & A partnership.  I don't like locking in for another 2 years and wondering what I'm in for because of my choice.

Yup, wife Samsung Epic works that way on our Samsung blue-ray player. Haven't tried my phone. I can't believe all the things this phone does. I use a sleep analyzer to see how long I was in a deep sleep, I compare prices while I'm shopping at the store, check the speed of a vehicle I'm riding in. Nothing like back seat driving, and telling the driver how fast they are speeding.
How does a phone know when you're in a deep sleep ?

1) Besides making calls & accessing the internet, what else will a smart phone do?
I use my Android phone (Samsung Captivate) as an all-around organizer.  It integrates extremely well with Google's web apps (Gmail, Google Docs, google calendar, contacts, etc), so I use it as an extension of my desktop.  If I enter a contact in my phone, it automatically updates in my Gmail contacts, and vice-versa.  If I enter a date in my Google calendar, it shows up on my phone.  If you use Picasa for online photo storage, you can easily browse your gallery right on your phone.

I also use apps like Evernote, which is a notebook/note-taking application.  It is a must-have app for any smartphone user, IMO, and the great thing is there are clients for Windows and OS X as well as a web interface, and are synchronized and stored on their server, so the notes you take can be available to you anywhere you have net access.  I use it as a reference, any useful information I think I might need later on goes in there.  Shopping lists go in there, for instance when I think about something I need at the hardware store I put it in my hardware store shopping list.  The next time I find myself there, I just open up my list.  For me, Evernote works better than the dedicated shopping or task list apps.

There are a number of barcode scanners which are great when you're shopping.  Sometimes I see something which I'd like to do some research on.  I just scan the barcode, and I can get links to the item and sometimes even reviews.  I can do research easily right on the spot, or save the item and do more extensive research at home later.

When we are at the cottage, I tether my phone to my laptop for internet access.  With the Android 2.2 Froyo, I can make my phone a Wifi hotspot, so that my wife and I can both work on our laptops at the same time.

We subscribe to XM radio and as such got free XM online, so I can use my phone to listen to satellite radio no matter where I am.

2) Any tips on the type of data plan to get?
You have to ask yourself how much data-intensive use your phone is going to use.  When my wife was using the Wifi hotspot of my phone to stream TV shows at our cottage, we used 1GB in a weekend.  If you are not tethering a ccomputer and not streaming video or lots of audio, it is pretty hard for many people to exceed 1 GB or even 500MB.

I have a 6GB dataplan, but only because my carrier offered me a sweetheart deal (for Canada) at the time (upgrade to 6GB for $5 more than my old 500 MB Blackberry plan).  I plan to do lots of tethering in the future (no longer need to use my wife's Internet stick at the cottage), so I am glad I have it, even if I have only exceeded 1 GB once in the last 5 months.

Final note: if you haven't used a touch-screen smart phone, you should try to borrow one from a friend for a few days and see if you like it.  I find the touch-screen keyboards on both iPhones and Android smartphones to be very annoying for more than very short messages.  I don't care what anyone says, but text input is severely impaired on touch-screens.  If I had it to do over again, I'd buy am Android phone with a real slideout keyboard like the HTC Desire Z.  None were available in Canada when I got my phone.

Personally, I use an iPod Touch to run apps and use a ruggedized cell phone instead.

I've never seen a ruggedized smart phone, or I might consider going that route.

I look at it this way: if I'm ever stranded somewhere and my iPod breaks, no big deal.  I might not like the fact, but at least it was just the iPod.

If I'm ever stranded somewhere and my PHONE breaks... with no pay phones or anything around...

I think that's where heavy duty cases come into play. The otterbox Defender series is pretty good at keeping your phone in one piece and dust free though it does add a great deal of bulk. Defender series is made for a wide variety of smartphones running all platforms.

I've had all 4 iPhone iterations and work them hard!  I've had otterboxes...not too fond of the otterbox cases for the iPhone 4. I just recently received a mophie juice pack which doubles as a nice case and  close to double the iPhone battery life!!!  I have almost always been jailbroken and use mywi and often stream music, emails, surf etc. I don't generally keep phones for more than 1 or 2 years, but I really like the iPhone 4!  It is very business friendly for me and I would certainly recommend to anybody in the smartphone market!  Just my .02!

The Otterbox Commuter gives great protection to my 'Berry, and without the bulk of the Defender.

First, let me boast a little that I got my Verizon iphone on Monday and I'm very happy other than paying for 2 networks for over a couple of years just to use the old one.  It felt weird though not having a protective case for it as they aren't available yet because of the change in the mute switch location from the AT&T version.  I think Otterbox defender case is great, but not available yet, so I did a lot of looking around the internet last night for something that I could use temporarily and found that Griffin had come out with this military style case for the new iphone and it's on Verizon's website, although they don't allow you to order it from the site just yet.  You can get it through Verizon c.s. or do like I did today and find a store that has them.  I got one "from the back" as it's not out yet until the iphones release tomorrow.  Lucky for me that cute female manager that's previously helped me out, helped me out again.  Now let's see how it holds up.  So far, doing a bunch of drywall work today, the phone seems well protected, but the holster part sucks.  I'll post more as I put it through its paces.

I used to carry around one of those Casio G'z One indestructable phones and an iphone.

No pictures, it didn't happen. [tongue]

;D ;D

I have to weigh that decision carefully.  I may screw my chances if I do post her pic for the world to see.  I'll ask her if it's ok, first.

No, you'll be fine, she'll gladly sell you another phone.... [tongue]

Found an interesting article online today on why NOT to buy a Verizon iPhone.
...
That and the fact that the iPhone 5 is anticipated in June.  The author makes some very good points.
There is ALWAYS a new iPhone coming out next June.

pretty interesting piece of bias there based on a high school student standard mall food court survey
