So - sell me a Carvex ......

RESULT.

NMA's tech just called me, to confirm that the motor was open-circuit. He then also said 'These saws are built like battleships and should easily last 10 years, even with hard use. My service manager's asked me to replace the motor as it was clearly a one-off substandard component. This will be done for you with our compliments and apologies'.

My thanks to Mafell's UK importer for a happy ending.

Thanks also to everyone who contributed such great advice on this thread. I really appreciate your input.

Great to hear!

If I may present my view of the moral of the story:

Whenever possible, when the front-line service one gets is not acceptable, we should try as much as possible to find the energy to contact the higher level. Be it a supervisor, the actual vendor etc. etc. Giving the company a chance to react is not only polite. It is also quite likely to result in the problem being resolved.

All well-run organizations have processes to handle exceptional situations that the "default" front-line process cannot address.

At the very least one is then sure that harsher measures to address the situation are indeed warranted when things do not work out.

First off good for you...nice to know that Mafell has your back...with a little prodding.  [smile]

It's also reassuring to hear the other 2 comments you listed.

I was hoping though that the Hilti was going to find a home.

That’s more like it.

It did find a home, [member=44099]Cheese[/member]. I called up the Hilti rep this morning before NMA called me, and I ordered it. Two reasons why - 1) It's a great saw. I really liked it, and figured that it would be a very useful 'Plan B' tool to have on simple cordless-only install work involving basic tools such as the combi etc. Since I already have a pile of Hilti batteries, it just seemed like a sensible addition which wasn't breaking the bank. Plus - I don't like to mess people around and waste their time - the rep had visited me, giving up his time in good faith and he'd done a super-helpful job. I just felt that ordering the machine was the right and honourable thing to do.

And 2) - I have a large kitchen remodelling job starting on Friday. Since I still didn't know at the time what the outcome would be from NMA, I couldn't take the risk of not having a jigsaw available. The Hilti will be here tomorrow, along with its newly-fixed and corded friend  [smile]

Well, that’s a happy ending isn’t it!
To be honest, from the starting post I wondered if not your rep. from your pro-shop would take a quiet battle with the Mafell importer. That’s a quality stamp when they fire up the cogs and stand up for you as a customer. My guess is that once Mafell’s rep. understood that they wasn’t facing an end of life beaten jig saw from a customer who actually was happy with Mafell.
They did the right thing, both.

Ah well, fairly understandable that you would buy the Hilti as well.
The Norwegian Hilti and Festool importer do these stunts, visiting shops and work sites pushing Hilti and Festool with back up.. It’s a fact that it’s harder to let down a sales rep. that goes the extra mile, before. Those who deliver afterwards as well, do good.
It all comes at a price though.

Thanks for that [member=71478]FestitaMakool[/member] & [member=8955]Coen[/member] ...those PDF's are the cross reference between the old series numbering and the new series numbering.

It's also nice that some guidance to blade speeds and pendulum stroke are given.  [thumbs up]

Glad you liked it Cheese. I gathered that I had seen one chart lately, and it helps when shopping for specific use. I’ve found the Festool blades to be very good.
