Solid oak worktop advice
you can say what you like about oak worktops but I am a big fan of them and I know that I will look after mine properly so I have fitted them in my new kitchen at home (2nd hand kitchen that was ripped out of a customers house and was still excellent condition) only had to buy worktops. I have fitted loads of wooden tops for customers and always just oil, oil, oil, oil and stress to the customer to keep oiling. I gave mine 4 coats of oil on both sides before installing. I will oil them once a week for the first few months until they have built up a proper seal then just every few months or so. They have been fitted for 7 days now still with just 4 coats of Danish oil and already there is a small watermark at the sink which I will sand out and re-oil. My question is, is there a product out there that gives it an instant reliable seal, that can handle small spills and cups without leaving a ring mark etc? I have been recommended unika solid wood worktop mousse and was going to pick some up tomorrow. Any suggestions? I know wooden tops are high maintenence but surely you should be able to place coffee cups or have small splashes from sink without it ruining the surface?

I have wood countertops in my own house and have done dozens in the field for customers. I prefer them.

Mine are cherry. I did Watco danish and then 4 coats of oil poly. I have never had to redo them. Even with a now 9 year old son. If I were to do it over, I would do poly again. Now waterbornes are up to the task as well.

Danish oil alone is not enough. Get a clear on. Waterbornes dry pretty quick. You could also do the first couple coats in sanding sealer if you wanted faster turnaround.

I agree with Scott's advice.  Some might say that tung oil is tough enough, but I don't have any first hand experience to say either way.

Tung oil isn't tough in the least compared to Stays Clear. It takes awhile to harden but when it does it's real strong.

I've got Osmo Poly X rapid on the tops that aren't near water and that will withstand spills and cups without an issue.

The worktops near water aren't wood, I've had it with the maintenance  [eek] - it's not just that, I'm the guy in my house who switches off the lights, the tv, closes doors...you get the picture. Our house isn't compatible with wood worktops near water.
