Spike TV's "Framework" Show features Jory Brigham and other furniture designers

I watched the latest episode at 0530AM here in Nigeria, through the VPN system I use to circumvent the block on viewing overseas.

I'd be curious to know if the Modify Headers add-on for Firefox worked for you over there Frank. Works for me here in the UK where "the content is not available in your Country".

Am wondering if the show will improve when there's less time given over to whoops and high fives from lots of contestants and can focus more on the actual work, but as others have said, I doubt it.

I actually liked the show from a design perspective.  Yes, right now it's a bit gimmicky and mostly about highlighting some of the more abrasive (no pun intended) personalities. But I think the networks have to do that - first of all, to try to hook non-woodworkers and non-builders on it and second, because they have so many people competing right now that they can't show that much of the build process in an hour.  My wife watches it with me and asks questions about the tools and joinery, etc.  So if it inspires people to pay attention, be curious and appreciate the craft, then so be it.

From past experience, shows like this focus more on the work and the design when you have fewer and better people left.  That way each one gets some screen time, you already know the personalities and people can focus more on the work.  It'll never be New Yankee Workshop or anything like that, but I think it'll get more interesting.  My guess is that they give the finalists a few weeks/months to work on a small collection of pieces to really showcase their skills. I thought the table Jory did was absolutely gorgeous and striking so I'm anxious to see what else he can do on the show!  Good Luck, Jory!

I wonder what the winning contestant will do with their $20,000 gift card from Ace. Not exactly a fine woodworkers store of choice :D.    There's Craftsman, dewalt, and black and decker there.  Funny that the tools you see them using wouldn't ever be found at Ace, like Bessey clamps, festool and General and so on.  I guess they can use it to buy paint and maybe some door hinges. But hey, I guess you take whoever will sponsor.

Ace DOES have Titebond! [big grin]  $20,000 would buy a lifetime supply!! [wink]

I just wanted to share a photo of the piece from Jory from this week's episode. The objective was to create a custom ping pong table, both stylish and functional. I think this turned out amazing considering the short build time. I particularly like the hand woven net.

I also ever the show, and watch about 4-5min of the show.
The design and build is what I want, not the "personalities".
I also dvr other woodworking shows( this old house, fine woodworking,ect...),
That way I only watch what I am interested in,and fast forward the rest.

In a world of the kardasians, this show does not surprise me,disappoint yes, surprise no.
Have a great day,Chuck

That is an incredible piece.  Especially when you take into account only 24 hours to design and build!!!

That is pretty awesome!  I'd be afraid to play on it for real though.

its a SHOW to advertise their sponsors with drama to boost ratings and not a new yankee workshop if you want to learn about the build process and joinery. they did their hw on who  their audience is...and its clearly not FOG owners, diyers and trim carpenters. its on the same level of hgtv design stars. that jory's table looks like his chairs.

this one was my fav epi. my fav piece was the melting of the cd's. very unique and creative. jorys piece looks great too! everything he makes looks very professional just that they all have the same style of legs made of walnut (walnut everything). I wish he comes out of his comfort zone and include metals into this builds. as of right now it looks like hes the clear finalist.

Agreed. I'm really enjoying the show. Jory's construction is head and shoulders above everyone else's from what I've seen so far. Hopefully he can keep the creativity up until the end.

I always go to Ace when I need hardware.  They have a great selection, and better prices than the big box stores.  I could just buy every nut and bolt in every size I ever could ever imagine needing.  Other than that, I'd sure be hard pressed to use up $20K at Ace.  [smile]

Ace Cashier, "Will that be all?"
Winner, "Yes, just these nuts and bolts."
Ace Cashier, That will be $9.83.  You now have $19,990.17 left on your gift card."  ;D

I was thinking the same exact thing when I first heard them say $20K to Ace. I'm sure there's plenty on the website you could spend the money on, though I went on and couldn't find much :/ maybe they can sell the 20K for 15k to another store.

Watch the episode carefully. At one point, they show a virtual WALL of green Systainers.  Maybe Jory brought his own tools!! [thumbs up]

Happy to see he won again! [big grin]

Cheers,

Frank

When a program like this is in the development stage and they start rounding up talent it is always possible they catch a REAL talent in their net as opposed to the rest of the field. I would not be surprised if Jory is, in fact, head and shoulders above the rest and no one realized this at the outset.

They could also have realized it all along and planned the entire thing...

That is more likely than the network not knowing where his skills are.  One 10 minute visit to his website and Vimeo channel make it pretty obvious that he is a rockstar woodworker.

Networks leave as little as possible to chance and most likely internally screen candidates to exhaustion as set out to make a hit show.  I'd imagine they know their target audience, and have a detailed recipe for the candidates that they select to be on shows like this.
