I wonder what the winning contestant will do with their $20,000 gift card from Ace.  There's Craftsman, dewalt, and black and decker.  Funny that the tools you see them using wouldn't ever be found at Ace, like Bessey clamps, festool and General and so on.  I guess they can use it to buy paint and maybe some door hinges. But hey, I guess you take whoever will sponsor.

Ace DOES have Titebond! [big grin]  $20,000 would buy a lifetime supply!! [wink]

Only Kev would do such a thing - right, Kev?

Jory did well again!

I really wish they would show the finished product of the other participants as well though.

Here's Jory's build from this week's episode. Each contestant was assigned an odd material to work with. Jory and Freddy, having won last week, got to assign materials to themselves and the other contestants. Jory selected bungee cords and built this hammock, going on to win again this week.

I missed the pingpong episode and they only have highlights of it online, I wonder where I can watch.

Shane,
You obviously have some kind of connection to be getting these photos.  Any chance of getting Jory to sign up for the FOG and discuss the contest (after it ends I'd assume) or general participation?

My connection is his Facebook page!  [big grin]

I can see if he will sign up if I can get in touch with him. But I can't make any promises.

OK -- my luddite refusal to sign up for facebook is showing.  Thanks for copying the photos over for us.

There's an hour I will never get back. Watched the show last night and was not impressed at all. The show is CRAP. The producers of the show definetly don't know who their audience is. I would expect a show of this nature would actually spend more then approx 7 minutes showing us the build process of the projects. I was expecting to see how the pros actually build and finish their pieces and explain why they chose that tool or why they chose a certain way to join wood together. More time was spent showing us the bickering and chirping between all of the contestant, except our fellow Festoligan, Jory, then actual footage on the build process of their project, the ping pong table. If I wanted to spend an hour of my life watching people trash each other, I would watch the Bachelorette.
If you want to waste an hour of your life and watch way too many commercials and people trashing each other, then this show is for you. If you want to learn something about woodworking, then find another show or read a good magazine.
Now for the ping pong table, the judges did get it right by choosing Jory's table. It looked great. It would have been nice to see how he fabricated the base of the table, but instead we saw footage of people acting like a bunch of kids and not professionals. It was nice to see at least one person, Jory, not get sucked into that childish behaviour. I hope he remains a professional for the rest of the show and shows these other yahoo's how to make furniture. Hope he wins. Good luck Jory.
Thanks for giving it a try. If I had it my way I would gladly trade the drama for some of the process. Unfortunately 90% of people who watch reality shows do it for the drama. The rest are interested in what the show is suppose to actually be about. Trust me, there was all kinds of welding, upholstering, concrete work, and of course tons of woodworking. I personally did it for the what I'm passionate about.  Thats why I stayed away from the drama as much as possible. I had to fight them on it, but the last thing I wanted to do was cheapen, or disrespect the craft.  I hope that I was able, in some way to show people the possibilities regarding furniture building and design. I have no say in how they edit this show, or even how they want to depict me. I hope that it will at least show through in what I build during each episode. I honestly don't blame you if it tough to stomach the bickering, I dont even own a t.v, and reality shows especially gross me out. But i think there is some good in this. This is still a show about woodworking when you get past the drama. If theres anything you would like to know regarding any of the builds I would be more than happy to answer questions. a few days after each episode I will also write a brief post about the actual build, including the process on my blog.

Thanks!!

Jory

Very cool! Thanks for popping in.

I don't think I've ever heard someone on one of these shows ever say that it was NOT scripted drama, so I've just learned to take all of it with a grain of salt.

I also DVR it, and I tend to do something else when it is on, so I can tune some of the stuff out, and catch what I want.  Maybe once they get rid of a few more people then they will show more of the actual build process.  It has the same general tone as most reality shows, but I guess that is what most want, since there are so many shows produced this way.
I think in most cases you are correct about the drama but I can't imagine people that would be interested in this show would want the drama. I went on to Spikes web site and gave them feedback on the  stating my feelings about all the trash talk.

Hey Don, I love that you actually went onto spikes site and gave your feedback, I have a lot of respect for that. I think you are absolutely right, this show could be better. I'm hoping that if there is another season they can put a bit more of the process into it. They filmed somewhere close to 30,000 hours of footage. I would say 90% of that was of the process. There is some great scenes of us doing stuff that would really be interesting for those of us who love woodworking. Feel free to shoot me any questions regarding any of the builds. I would be happy to get into it with you. Thanks again doing what yo did!  Jory

I am a fan of Jory's work and look forward to seeing the designs out of this show. I very rarely watch anything like reality TV, but I will watch something which shows real talent with visual artisans. I also will enjoy catching the festools in the show. A SHOT everytime you see a Festool! Framework, the new drinking game.

Thanks for the love Anthony! I too have a hard time with the Drama, but a couple shots will definitely numb the pain:)

Watch the episode carefully. At one point, they show a virtual WALL of green Systainers.  Maybe Jory brought his own tools!! [thumbs up]

Happy to see he won again! [big grin]

Cheers,

Frank
Thanks Frank, Yeah they allowed us to bring a few of our own tools. That was huge, because anything there were certain things that ACE sells that Festool could not supply. I would have suffered some depression if I had to use a black and decker sander instead of my Rotex.

I watched it too.  I am sure the program is edited to make the drama the principal character of the show.  I am gunning for the woodworkers that demonstrate character and humility to win the prize, as opposed to those who make the most drama for the audience.

Unfortunately, I'd say Spike is actually probably very aware of their target market.  More than likely true woodworkers are in the minority, so we aren't their target audience.

The broader base market probably craves the fighting and drama.  Not my cup of tea, and possibly a sad indicator for the state of the world we live in.

To see quality shows like Extreme Makeover Home Edition (not a real comparison, but a show without drama, and complete heart) cancelled is a sad reminder of what society at large values.

A quick look at Google Trends reveals that the #1 searched item today so far with 50,000+ search was Miley Cyrus.  Yesterday was Zooey Deschanel, and a host of other celebrity gossip.

OK, I'll hop off my soapbox and say that this is what I appreciate about the FOG.  We are large in number, but many that come here are not representative of the majority…and that is a good thing.

Now perhaps someone out there can create a platform for better quality tv without the drama.  You have my support :)

wow nice to see you signed up to fog jory! That last guy they kicked off was soo deserving, he looked lifeless and was totally not into the pressure of the builds. the duct tape guy was was  [blink]. anyhow grasshopper said it best, i really enjoy the show and look forward to it every tues.

It sucks i can't watch it.  Love Jorys work.  In fact i am going to try & make a copy of his Hollister cabinet.  I have some oak cut up ready (hope you don't mind Jory)

Even though a can't watch it i am rooting for you to win  ;D

I watch it online in the UK. Get modifyheaders plugin for Firefox. Pm me if you need help.

Jory,

I have to say it is cool to see you here on the FOG.  I sincerely appreciate not just the skill that you bring to the show, but also the class with which you execute.

You definitely bring style to the show, and let your work do the talking.  It can be pretty tacky when folks feel compelled to brag about themselves on shows like this, or in life generally.  You on the other hand, seem to know your skill and execute with a much more humble confidence, which is awesome.

At the end of one's life, the greatest project a woodworker builds is himself.  Your character shines through indeed.

Thanks for being a positive example in the reality TV chasm, and keep up the good work!
