Spindle Sander

I've wanted a floor model based spindle sander for several years now, but never got around to buying one.  While rationalizing last week on how much I've spent on Festools during the past 9 or 10 months, I told myself go for it, so, I bought the Grizzly G1071.  Main reasons were the ten spindles, of which 6 sizes are 9" in length (I wanted those longer lengths) and the price....

I paid for the lift gate service, bought a pallet Jack because the Griz website says it is your responsibility to get it from the street to your shop.  The truck arrived 4 days after purchase, driver had his own lift jack (of course) and told me to return the one I bought unused, he would deliver it right into my shop.  He received a nice tip....

I've heard good and bad stories about Grizzly fit and finish, but never bought any of their products, so didn't know what to expect.  After spending some time removing the Cosmoline from the table top (WD-40 works best), and going through the few set-up steps needed, I switched it on.  What a difference from the benchtop Ryobi (I know, no comparison)...  Very quite, tried several spindle sizes, no run out, and massive top - 25 x 25 inches....  Fit and finish - couldn't find anything to complain about, looked and operated great! No vibration....  Will try out the 4" dust collection port today and see if I need to make some mods for improvement in that arena.

I'm really looking forward to using this in the coming years....  I'm even considering selling my Kapex to fund the big 3HP Oscillating Edge Sander Grizzly sells......

I bought the same machine from Amazon.ca about a month ago, ordered it Wednesday afternoon and it was delivered Friday morning with lift gate service. I have the same experience with fit and finish, the one downfall is the dust collection doesn't work very well. I plan to get a magnetic dust shoot and put it on the table top. Right now I have a mickey mouse table top dust collection setup that works OK.

I have a couple State's, B-4's.  I did have 4, sold two, should sell the other spare.

Then I could buy the 36" double disc sander I have been wanting.

The RO90 with extended delta is my spindle sander.  ;D

John,

I had my Jet dust collector (4" system") hooked up to the spindle sander today, it does suck some of the dust, perhaps half, the other half gets thrown across the table top. I read in some review where someone boxed in some of the area below the table, thus, creating more down draft.  I will try that mod later.  As far as the sander goes, love it!

Gary I had thought about doing that but going the simple route for now. My only concern for boxing the bottom would be the rare occasion you might want to tilt the top. Please post how it works when you have time.

John,

If you google or search on YouTube for G1071 dust modifications, there is a 3+ minute video by Ronald Walters where he shows his mods to better capture dust on the spindle sander.  It basically encloses the area below the table, but, you can remove it if you need to tilt the table.  I will eventually build something similar to that in the video.....

A good portion of the industrial spindle sanders had chambers cast inside the tables that the dust was collected through right at the table.  These were all oscillating sanders and worked rather well.

Me, I don't care about it.

Thanx for the video link, while I think this would work for a lot of the narrow width materials being sanded I wonder how well it would do with some of the taller pieces I get into. May try a temporary setup  with a 6" line to see how well it works.

Darcy I would have liked to have found an older State or Max but that didn't happen, but would still consider one if it falls in my lap. I would not find it a great loss to get rid of Grizzly but for now it will do.  Not quite the selection this side of the border as you have available to you.  A machine with superior integral ducting in the machine would be nice.

Your not concerned to much about dust collection at your age and I have to admit neither was I, but some of us pay the price with age and your dust sensitivity can change with time as mine did.
