Split top slab bench

Mauri

That's some nice work your producing. I like that's it's so simple but striking.
Nicely done, keep up the good work and awesome ideas.

Wow, awesome table. Would love to see what else you have made.

Been thinking of different projects that have a similar kind of a big miter joinery/style. Not sure if the track saw have the accuracy to pull it off since Felder is dream material. Anyone tried ?

That looked like bubinga wood.  Ashamed to lose the live edge.  But I liked the finished product.

Awesome shop and craftsmanship.

Router bit: It's a CMT 12mm shank and about 40 or so mm wide (1,5 inch) If you're interested I can give you the item nr tomorrow. (in bed now.. [embarassed]) BUT!! I'm using this bit only in the OF2200 and wouldn't do otherwise, meaning you need some heft! With the 2200 taking 1 or 2 mm in one pass can safely be done even when climb-cutting. When I purchased the bit a year and a half ago or so, I actually called Festool Finland to ask them about their recommendations on how to dail in the speed on the router for this router bit. Full speed isn't a problem as long as you don't feel the router slowing down very much they told me. And it doesn't. Even if you could hear the motor changing the sound somewhat the torque remains the same. It's an expensive bit but the interchangeable insert knives make it totally worth it.

Damm, thats too bad. I have the 1400 and I don't think I can justify getting the 2200 just at the moment :( so going to have to keep jointing and planning by hand for the the moment. But for the future I would be interested in knowing the bit you use and if you know of any sources for finding out more about this method.

Here some more info on the bit. I mentioned before width of the bit about 1,5 inch but I checked and it's 60mm which is more like 2,4 inches. You can use other smaller router bits (obviously saver in a smaller machine) to achieve the same result, it just takes a bit longer. Do a google search on "flattening with a router sled"

Pff, can't seem to attach an image. Anyways, the bit I'm using is a CMT. (Italian manufacturer)

spoil board surfacing router cutter HW
S=12    D=60X12X80mm    Z=2
Item number 663.002.11

I have a 2012 catalog but it shows the older version of a similar cutter with NR 663.001.11 and might be for cnc only. (shank looks little different, you can see this also on their online catalog)

Kind regards,
Mauri

Thanks for the details on the bit.

Looks like CMT only make that bit in a 20mm/ 3/4" shank but the Amana RC-2252 has  a 1/2 shank.

Tim,
I noticed that Amana also has a listing for a similar bit.  They state that it is a "router bit" and it comes in different sizes in 1/2 inch and 1/4 inch diameter shafts.

Mauri,
I love the look of the bench and so does my wife!

Thanks Neil, indeed, it's Bubinga. The live edge had to go... If you haven't seen it already, here's another project of mine made from Bubinga. No live edge but some nice contrast with the sapwood (if i may say so myself...  [big grin])

Kind regards,
Mauri (ce)

Another BEAUTIFUL piece!  now you're just showing off [wink]

Haha, lol. Appreciate it but of course we're all just cutting and glueing some wood, right  [big grin]

Excellent job with your videos.  Second only to the projects themselves.

Loved the cutting board and glad you saved the sapwood on the sides with the book matching!
