Squaring up

I recently bought a festool 1010 router. Also picked up the edge guide and I can't figure out how to square it up with the center lines on the router itself. I tried squaring it off with one of my 55" tracks, but one side always seems to be off. Thank you for any input.

Hi BuildArt!  Welcome to the FOG.  I am not sure I am understanding your question fully -- the edge-guide should fit square to the router automatically when you install it.  The guide rods are square to the base of the router and the edge-guide.  You can use the center lines on the router base to line up your cut and then adjust the edge guide to be parallel and at the right distance.

I had a similar question to this .. it seems that the distance from the guide rail to the centre line of the router is based on how it is adjusted.  Is there a way to use the guide rail edge similar to when you use the ts55 saw?  i.e. can it be a set distance from the edge of the rail?

This would be good for running dados on the side of shelf units, etc.

Any thoughts?

The way I use the guide stops for routers is to estimate how far I want the guide rail to be from the cut/dado/whatever line and place it parallel to that line and at the approximate distance from it. I then use the fine adjustment to dial that distance in.

Yep this is how I do it as well. In fact that micro adjust was the first accessory  I got for my 1010.

That is the correct part number for the micro adjust for the OF1010.

The first is what is called a Guide Stop and in NA, currently, it comes with the OF 1010. It makes the router run parallel to and at a set distance from the Guide Rails. When one buys an OF 1010, it is included but the Fine Adjuster, 488754, is not and must be purchased separately.

I spoke with a member who was still unclear on this subject after reading my post above. I realized that by using stock images, I probably made it more confusing for some so here goes another try...

The image below shows what the OF 1010 currently comes with in NA that aids in making it go in a straight line. It includes the router, the rods, the Guide Stop, and the support "foot" with it's mounting thumbscrew. (Note: part #428608 is just the foot and does not include the thumbscrew. I've seen a lot of websites that show both and it is deceiving.)

This image shows how to set up on a guide rail with just what comes with the router.

Note in this image that the support foot has markings. This is so that you not only know where the center of the bit will be but also the leading and trailing edges, which is usually more important.

Here is the Find Adjuster for the Guide Stop, 488754. It comes with a thumbscrew to attach it to the router and one to attach it to the rod.:

Here is how the fine adjuster works. Thumbscrew #1 attaches it to the base of the router. Thumbscrew #2 attaches it to the rod. To fine adjust the Edge Guide, loosen the thumbscrews on the router that secure the rods, tighten thumbscrews #1 & #2 below, and turn the green knob. Each mark moves the router .1mm closer to or farther away from the Guide Stop and one turn moves it 1mm. When you get it where you want, tighten all the thumbscrews.

The other accessory that guides the OF 1010 in a straight line is the Edge Guide, 489427, and it is pictured below. Note that it comes with the rods again so when you buy the router and the Edge Guide, you will have an extra set of rods. This is arguably the most useful accessory for routers.

This is how to set up with the Edge Guide for running parallel to and at a fixed distance from an edge.

The Edge Guide, 489427, does not come with a fine adjuster. The Fine Adjustment for the Edge Guide is 483358 and is shown below.

To use it, set up like below. Tighten the rod attachment knobs on the router, loosen the thumscrews #1, and tighten the thumbscrews #2. Adjust using the knurled wheel in the middle. When you get it where you want, tighten all the thumbscrews.
