Starting to feel taken advantage of.

The cabinet cut looks perfect.... Its obvious that the plumbers used the wrong sink. They should be made to swap sinks until they find one that fits. [big grin]

Come on guys!! The gap isn't even noticiable when standing on the left side of the sink.  Who really needs to look at something from both sides anyways!!

The designer or contractor hired some one who did not know what they were doing.
I was on 2 year project that wrap up in august that the contractors crew did not know what they
doing . The contractor hired me after the fact to fix all this kind of crap. I think I might have another month.
What fun ... .. Not
Do right the first time is my theory it cost less looks better.
But that's just me.

Jon,

Though Im not in the trade myself, I have a lot of close friends who are. About the only thing I can add to the conversation is something I found by talking to my "chippy/ carp" friends.

When these designers etc try to go cheap on the labor, they get what they pay for. Usually they end up going to my friends after the cheap immigrant labor is finished the project is finished and the HO/designer sees how screw up the work is and needs someone with skills to go back and repair what these guys have screwed up.

Then my pals hammer them. But trust me, When these designers etc go cheap on the labor they get what they pay for and screw themselves in the long run.

Its their rep that goes down the toilet not yours when they go cheap.

Old spanish saying "cheap cost you more".

I keep looking at this thread to see if there's a happy ending to Jon Hilgenberg's designer trying to undercut his price... I hope for his sake things turn out in his favor.
A lot of high paying jobs are disappearing in North America, people keep undercutting each other for work and unions have no power anymore either.  [mad]

Some great points and words of gospel from Dan.  Going to print them out.

As far as a happy ending...it's off to a good start.  Told him I couldn't do the install and suggested he get the other guy (b or c team quality).  On a job like that, things will start going sideways pretty quick.  Hopefully the designer will keep track of his hours spent managing this project, pretty sure it will be double compared to jobs I'm on.

Attached photo is of the farm sink cutout the b team did.  Keep in mind the final walkthrough with the client is a day away, countertops are set, and this is just now being addressed.  There is an utter lack of management and oversight on this job.  And I have a feeling that's because he never has to worry about a thing on jobs I install.  No punch, problems addressed immediately, and tight workmanship.  I have a few more pics of his work that I would never accept, but I don't want to sidetrack the thread :).

A big thanks to Dan for the words of wisdom.  Dude knows his stuff.

Jon

Well they aient building steinways

I have to agree that cheap labor results in low quality work sometimes.

However, I have seen some low bid contractors that are desperate for work and need to pay their mortgage and do a good job.  In the end they are driving the cost of labor lower and lower can only result in poor quality construction and that is where the Property Owner needs to be educated on what's quality and what's junk.

My wife and were paired with another couple at the local golf course and the husband was a construction superintendent for a track project not too far from us with starting prices of $1 Million dollars.  He told us about customers constantly complaining and he responded that "you bought a track home" you saw the models and that is what you get just because you paid a million dollars plus, doesn't mean you get special attention [eek]

That's a too-abundant problem around here.  Toll Bros. (as one example) has an earned reputation for shoddy design/workmanship as well as shabby treatment of their customers along with ridiculously high prices.

Same as out here on the West Coast.

Same thing here in Jersey an PA.

My daughter and her husband are looking to move and Toll Brothers is their prospective builder. I looked at the plans, and what they're being ask to pay and what they are getting is atrocious. I cringed at what certain upgrades would cost. I am trying to nudge her and her husband in another direction.

Green,

I don't live in an area that has Toll Brothers infestation, but I have had to travel to the Philly area to repair a few for a client that moved there. Ended up spending a month between their home and some of their friends. I implore you to do what you can to discourage your daughter in the strongest way not to purchase one of their homes. No matter what they spend, they will get a home riddled with issues.

If need be she can call me. I'm sure my client would be more than happy to share their sad experiences with their home and the builder.
