Stuck 1/4" bit in CXS 12 Fastfix

My Malco TS1 metal sheer is stuck onto the fastfix connector on my CXS12. It has a standard 1/4" bit.

The first time I used it, it came out very easily but now it doesn't come out at all. I've tried rotating the bit against and with the screwdriver direction. It wiggles a little and I can also move it a couple of mm forward and backward, but it doesn't come out at all - even with about 50 lbs of pull force.

Any ideas?

Apply some 3 in 1 oil, put the drill in a vise and hit the Malco with a dead blow hammer, preferably downward.

Good luck

That seems like it would break the locking mechanism in the CXS 12, won't it?

At this point I would try heat.
Torch
Heat gun
You can shield the entire drill except the problem area with a piece of sheet metal.

Ok, thanks! I got it out. I put some LiquiFix lubricant on it that I had, and then just wiggled the bit around for about 10 seconds and it came right out.

Occasionally a router bit gets stuck in a collet.  Our tool and die maker showed me a technique that has worked reliably to release it.

He took a small deadblow hammer and tapped gently against the side of the bit.  For years I did not have a small deadblow hammer and I did the tapping with a small piece of wood.  That worked fine too.

I’m glad you got it out.  The tapping method is faster and easier.

The cause is the split ring moving too far over onto the bit and stopping it coming out. You can get it out by using a pin to centre the split ring then the bit will pull out easily. More detail on this thread.
