Substitute for 35mm hole bit?

Building some cabinets and was looking into doing the cup hinges, which I've never used before.  I don't have a 35mm boring bit, and am going to order one, but as I'm in a bit of a rush (wanted to get cabinet finished before family starts piling in for holidays), I was wondering if anyone has ever simply substituted a 1 3/8" bit for this work, which comes in at 34.9mm.

Also, is there a difference between a hinge boring bit and a forstner bit?  Is it that the former doesn't produce a deeper point in the center of the hole?

I tried a 1 3/8" bit before and hinge was too tight. I re-drilled with a 35mm bit. I now use the Freud 35mm bit available at home depot. Works very well. Never tried a forstner bit for cabinet hinges. The Freud bit is made specifically for 35mm cabinet hinges.

Got it -- looks like I should just exercise patience then and wait for the 35mm bit to come, or use some other hinges  The hinge boring bit is double to triple the price of the forstner bit, but I'm not sure exactly why there is this price difference.

I really can't see why a 1 3/8" bit wouldn't work. The hinges are never really tight in a 35mm hole, so I can't see them not fitting in a 34.9mm hole!!!

I used a 1 3/8" Forstner bit just fine and they fit. The hinges were from HD but I can't imagine they're that much different as far as cup size.

This was drilled with 1 3/8" Forstner bit in drill press. Hinges are from HomeDepot.

I have always used a 1 3/8 forsner bit with no issues.  I only use Blum hinges and slides.  Home Depot and Lowes hinges are not built very well and there adjustments are very crud.  I know a lot of companys sell Blum online and locally.  Trust me once you use Blum or another quality hinge you will never buy another hinge from HD or Lowes.  They are price $7.50 to $10.00 a pair depending on overlays and types.

lol did you go wrong hanging that door? I see a screw hole there  [tongue]

Yes. I had to move all the lower doors down 1/2" because I forgot to count in the gap. They were for my garage storage cabinets, so I was ok there. [embarassed]

I have use both sizes in my shop with Blum and Grass hardware & had no problems, I do not know if this is true with other hardware. Big box store stuff will work to in most cases I would think also, but it's junk. 35 years ago the bit were very hard to find & I had a cabinet shop, so I have been in your shoe in this matter. Good luck

Yes it works. I bought a complete 3 hole boring device that fits in a drill press and man its been awesome ..about 200/dollars. It had all the bits and all 3/turn at once.
