I've enjoyed using my new Surfix for a few projects so far. My question is whether to use Rotex or Random Orbit mode when burnishing the oil using the Vlies pads?

[welcome] to the FOG! You'll get lots of great information and answers here.

And be sure to post pictures of your projects. We LOVE pictures!

Didn't know this existed -- thanks.  The one thing the brochure does not note, however, is buffing out the wax finish (either with lambswool pad or one of the synthetic pads).  They seem to suggest that the felt pad works for both application of the wax and dialing up the shine, which is not the case.  From the last page of the brochure:

"--After the recommended drying time polish using the ROTEX or ETS and the white special non-woven cloth [White Vlies] or alternatively with the polishing felt
--Move the machine evenly over the workpiece until the desired shine is achieved"

I use ROTEX (gear)  mode.

However it may not matter. Although ROTEX mode is recommended when using a ROTEX, there are FESTOOL videos using an ETS150/3. The following brochure provides a guide to oiling and waxing using either sander.

For the Bench in this post,

[size=14pt] - I applied wax by hand, ran it over with white Vilies and then after around 20 mins I buffed it with the Felt Pad. Gave it another buff next day; needn't have bothered.

Gentlemen,

Thank you for your replies to use the Rotex (gear driven) mode when using the Vlies (either green or white) pads. That's what I thought, but wasn't 100% certain. I will post a picture a picture of the staghorn fern frame later today. Thanks again for the tips, tricks, links and resources.

Thank you also for your welcoming notes to the FOG. I'm rounding out my first year with Festool gear and enjoying the quality tools. Now I am starting to enjoy the FOG community. I hope that I can be as helpful to others.

While, we are on the subject of oiling of woods. About a year ago, I installed some (1x8 lap/mitered) redwood on the south facing side of my home and used Penofin's Red Label Ultra Premium stain and finish. I was and am happy with the product. However, it's about time to re-coat the redwood. As an experiment, I still have a suitably sized scrap of Penofin stained redwood siding, that I will use the Surfix system with Outdoor oil and see how it comes out. I will report back my findings. Any thoughts or feedback?

Depending on how it turns out, I may choose to stick with the Penofin oil or I may choose to go the Surfix route.

Cheers!

I have used Surfix for 3 furniture projects so far. In all cases, I used the ETS-150-5 with great results.
