sword saw

WOW, to say not bad is to say nothing.
Looks interesting
Is it available in North America?

Track looks almost like Festool, Claps look the same.

Indeed
Deansocial is right , Protool is " Festools" heavy duty tooldivision

Wow, I would never have a use for such a thing, but I want to own one 'cuz its staggeringly cool.   [eek]

You guys notice it has a riving knife?!

I forget who makes it but someone has been selling that sword attachment for years that hooks onto a standard Skil wormdrive. Often thought about buying it but don't do timber work so no point.

i know the attachment you mean but neither that or worm drive saw are avail in the uk.  Protool have made the bigger version of this saw for a while and mafell have also(much better as it swings to 60 degree each way) but the are 3-4 time the price of this

Dean Was the name Prazi, I have a Prazi beam cutter mounted on a dewalt cs it works well but there is no auto oiling of the chain.

We have  a cheapo version of such a saw made by kress link. We use it to cut insulated roofpanels (Sandwichpanels that consist of two layers of masonite with insulation (polystyrene or pir) in between.
The kress saw is of much lower quality than the protool saw, which I have seen demonstrated last year, (especially the base) but the kress is good enough for the use we have for it, and it has longer chains available. (the kress does have an oil reservoir, but you have to open the valve before cutting, with the protool saw it's automatic)

(the kress saw is not rail-guided, but for our use we couldn't use the rail anyway, because we have to bevel the other way (you can't saw from the other side, because it's not flat))

Had a look at their website. Seems like Kress had a good look at Festool.

think i will save up and have the protool to be honest, The cost of a prazi and a circ to go with it and then the shipping to get over here would probably be a simlar amount anyway. Joiner i have seen the mafell but it is 3-4 time the price and i cant afford 2.5k for a saw

i had a play with the protool swordsaw univers ssp 200 at the brisbane trade expo in november 2009.

it is a beautiful tool and has lots of cool features which you can check out on protool.com.au

i regularly have to rip and cross cut 150mm - 200mm hardwood posts for pergolas, roofs and decks.

i like the swordsaw a lot, but i noticed it was difficult to get a splinter free cut even when using the protool/festool guide rails.

it spat out 2mm - 3mm wood chips on the cut line  and i could not find a way to rectify this issue.

it would be perfect for ripping heavy structural roof beams and floor joist beams which are hidden and are not on display.

but i decided it was not the tool for me, as i need a perfect splinter free cut similar to the quality of cut we can achieve with the festool ts 55/ ts 75.

btw, i recently got a great bargain on ebay for $800. it is the protool csp 165e circular saw which retails at $4000.

its maximum depth of cut is 165mm.

i have not used it yet as it is a bloody crazy, scary looking thing.

i will post some photos when i eventually put it to use onsite.

justin.

Dean there are two versions one for worm drive(we do not see this type of saw in the UK) and the prazi pr this fits the conventional type of cs, you would only need to buy the prazi in the states and bolt it to a saw that could be bought in the UK.the prazi web site has a list of saws the beam cutter will fit, the prazi costs around 150.00 usd.

I have used mine to cut seasoned oak beams and was impressed by the quality of the cut.its fitted to a 110v dewalt dw369

I had intnended to fit some type of oiler........but never have got round to it..

Lol its not a attachment you can put onto a circular saw lol.

I have been lookin at the SSP 200 the day it came out  it would be brilliant for roofing  using large clamps  have 20 rafters lined up and then Zap both ends at the desired angle in two cuts! Instead of 20x2  40 cuts with hand saw or circular saw or jigsaw or even chop saw. So you saved 38 cuts!!! Time saving or what!!!!! and the more you clamp the more cuts you save!!!!

Birds mouth with a circular saw needs to be finished of with hand saw  and jigsaw doesn't always stay straight so you can use the SSP200 free and and cut the birds mouths dead easy.

OR

If you have lots of money  while you have the 20 rafters clamped up and you have cut of both ends you then use this beast to do the birds mouth.

to cut the birds mouth in one go on all the rafters! With both them tools you couldn't be better set up for roofing
