Sys az drawers

I'm looking to build my own sys ports to finally tame the stack. I've weighted cost vrs time and I'm leaning towards using the sys AZ drawers. I'm looking to see how close they can be mounted to the drawer below them to minimize overall height of the units. I know most people just built to 32mm spacing, but I want to use the top surface as a workbench and I have limited wall space to spread out on. From what I can find with a search, the drawers need 1/2" underneath, assume that means every drawer. And I'm not sure why they are asking for 5/16 over top of top systainer?

If I want to put 5 systainers in one port, how much extra height would I need over just the stack of 5? 
 
The spacing is partially due to the little black lock latch that mounts on the left hand slide. Look closely at the Sys-AZ instructions and you will see what I am talking about. I'll try to go to the shop and measure tonight.

I built my cabinets using the LR32 and there was not a lot of wasted space.
 
I'm having second thoughts on the sys AZ drawers. Question for those who have built sys ports. If you built your own drawers, would you do it again? Same question for those who've used the sys az drawers?
 
If the SYS-AZ drawers make effective use of your space, then they're a great solution.

I use a combination of shelves and SYS-AZ drawers; shelves for the Systainers I don't use regularly and SYS-AZ drawers for those that I do. I find this works well for me.

You don't have to use the 32mm spacing, but I have also moved things around a little in terms of where the various Systainers are in the "stack" and using the 32mm system eases that due to the differing Systainer sizes. YMMV.

A couple of photos for reference, including the underside black latch that was mentioned above. As you can see, it drops into the space of the below Systainer, so you need to account for it at the bottom of the stack but it is less important from a "leaving a gap between Systainers" perspective.

One thing I learned the hard way - I built mine to maximize space, and it looks great.

But every time I fail to fully close the systainer latch and shove the drawer closed without thinking the systainer latch gets knocked off by the drawer above and ends up on the floor.

Next set will be spaced enough for the open latches to clear the drawer above..............

I have built my own draws and calculating my Time and materials its about the Same As an AZ draw, with the added Bonus of a good solid latch. I First built the sysports with Azubi draws ON the 32 mm spacing. Now i am free handing the distances. This Alows me to have more possibilities like  draws for 2x 1sys or a 2 sys. Some spacing is so tight that sys rubs on the catch Mechanismus of the tray above. No big Deal. Another advantage of the az is the ball Races are covered so no dust can drop in the Balls and Stick in the lube. I think the draws are well made and a good Design. Really depends if you want to spend 160€ to Speed up the Process. Happy Building.

What material did you use for the boxes? Is it MDF?

... which is as simple as flipping the offset-stop thingy around and repeating the run of holes.

Good idea. I wish you had suggested that a couple of years ago when I was making my workshop cabinets.

I wish I would have suggested it to myself when I built these a couple of years ago.

Notice the gap on the one Systainer.

I just built a bench, will be double deep, 16mm o.c.

Yes [member=10890]Bhend18[/member], it's painted 18mm MDF, colour matched to Festool light grey (RAL 7035).
 
I appreciate this topic.  I too have been debating on SYS storage.  I now have four SYS dollies because I thought that was the way to go.  I have no regrets and may part with one or two, but I did find that the dollies are really only good for getting SYS boxes to the work site, which is fine for a
