The Big Three!

What about a category for video's whether they are created by Marc, myself, Per, Snoop Dog or whoever else wants to show a Festool related product in action?

Dan Clermont

I like Dan's idea. I was thinking about a separate category just for Marc but this would be more appropriate and fair.

The big question is would everybody be happy with this setup? I would like to see Marc also include a link to his higher quality video link when he post his videos. Will this bring back the same arguments?

I know I am one of those that condemned Marc at the start of this thread. But he is starting to contribute to other threads which I didn't think he would. I've been a subscriber to his podcasts for over 6 months and they are worth watching. It would be a shame to boot him and his videos off because of advertising. Then we would be the ones losing out.

...  If you check carefully, you will see that there are far more people who greeted Marc warmly in this thread than the number that have given him a hard time.

So what are you saying, Frank, the bad guys here are the ones who object to blatant self-promotion and marketing, and the good guys are the pacifists that roll over for it?

Please don't tell me that when someone steps on your toes you actually thank them for the experience!

John
I am pointing out to Jay that by far the majority of respondents in this thread have welcomed Marc and see nothing at all wrong in what he has done.  Jay has been a valuable contributor to other forums that I have belonged to and I don't want us to put him off contributing to this one.

Per,
i wanna be famous too.

Let me be yer side kick.

I know all about rednecks. I grew up in Wisconsin.

Eiji.

With your quality of work and a good schtick,

(WAIT! that's it! Great Schtick Woodworking)

We have nowhere to go but up.

When Marc saw that his first post was not received well by all he came back and changed it. I respect that.

He also says he's sincere about wanting to participate more in this forum. I take him at his word.

It seems to me there's no longer anything  to disagree about.

... The topic is about mitersaw safety and doesn't even mention Festool directly.  But you just can't miss the big Green and Black elephant in the room.

Marc, speaking for myself only, the mentioning of Festool was never the issue. In fact, like everyone else here, I love seeing Festool stuff in action.

Have you given any thought to placing a flash player in the center of a blank web page (no ads), and simply posting a link to that? You could easily swap out flash files whenever you wish, and place the links in any forum without the concern of ruffling any feathers.

Also, with the player being the only thing on the page, you could make it larger. I've played your higher res files at a larger size on my own computer, and they look darn good.

Well maybe at the very least, what may come out of this thread is the setting of a precedent.  Blogs that produce free videos (with a profit motive) sort of represent a new category.  Especially when the website is sponsored by the company that shares a name with this forum.  ;)

Since part of my participation in this forum will include my videos, I would like to know what is the acceptable way of notifying people of a Festool-related video that would be of interest to them....marc

Marc - I don't see a thing wrong with providing a link to your videos on your web site.  And I don't see any need for yet another category of threads.  If Matthew has another plan, let him speak.

Marc,

I'd like to see your work, and I appreciate your providing a link to your site.

My only complaint about what you've done here so far, Marc, is that "The Big Three" is a dumb, uninformative title for a thread.

I suggest a thread title like "TheWoodWhisperer: Miter Saw Safety Video".  The body of the post could be "I just added my new video about miter saw safety to my site.  It's about general principles of miter saw safety and isn't Festool-specific."  No "WARNING: Commercial Site", nothing like that.

I didn't remember John's WoodShopDemos site, but I think that's the best analogy here.  We don't demand that John duplicate his content on this site or in a post, and no one gets upset when John posts a link to his site.  It is clearly a commercial site, but it's sort of grandfathered in as OK in the FOG collective memory.  Evidence of that is that I didn't even think of WoodShopDemos when this topic came up.

If Brice started putting ads (or Amazon Affiliate links) on his site, would we demand that he modify all his existing posts to reflect his new "commercial" status?

If Bill Esposito hasn't set up to get a little money when you go to the Woodpecker site from his, he needs to correct that.  His review might help you decide about a Woodpecker product, and it's certainly a convenience to have the link right in front of you.

In all of these cases, I think we'd all detect a skewed review pretty quickly.

Marc, I don't see why you should bother creating special ad-free pages to give us access to something that's free anyway.  I may fast forward through the commercials, but I don't expect the TV station to edit them out for me.

From what I've seen so far, your announcements don't belong in the Dealer Zone, in part because those announcement posts could be the start of good, useful, on-topic threads if we talk about your content, not how to classify you.

Ned

Good post Ned, the thread title is bad.

Wow! This thread has been read almost 3000 times! The contest rules thread only 300?

A lot of people are complaining to get off this topic already, but a lot of people sure are interested in it. I only wonder if they are reading to see the bickering or really have a point of view on this topic.

I only got in this thread because joraft made a comment, then he was attacked for what he said. Let him think what he wants I can not deny his logic. But
I do not care what the heck Marc does at this point. I only wish we could get this kind of feedback on the contest or rules threads.

I know, I will call Brice a Fu**ing A-hole(no offense meant Brice just an example)  ;) and then I bet everyone would be reading the contest criteria thread like crazy.

I hate closing threads, but out of any thread this one is really getting ripe, 4 pages?

Nickao

It seems to me that those who had even the slightest objection to Marc's "Big 3" post are in the extremely small minority.

Marc, don't waste your time pandering to their concerns.  Post away wherever and whenever you want.  You have clearly shown that you are a positive contributor to woodworking.

That's the way it is all forums, Nick, it's the "dust ups" that draw the crowds.  ;)

I also thought Ned's post was good. And I agree with most of it.

And as Marc said earlier, "for profit blogs" are a relatively new phenomenon, one that is sure to proliferate. And every forum will eventually need to develop some form of policy about the promotion of them, whatever that policy may be.

John

Isn't this all just a violent agreement?

1. No community wants to have it's forum gummed up with spammers, self-promoters and spelunkers1 - the nub of joraft's argument
2. Marc did his due diligence with the moderator and acted properly, but, at first glance, there was also a measure of self-promotion involved vide #1. Hence joraft's concern
3. The information was actually helpful and welcome to many Foggers, allowing many to overlook the minor self-promoting aspects of Marc's initial post.

Now get back to work and make some sawdust or earn some cash for more Festool goodness. ;D

1. I know, I know. It's a caver but I needed another S word for the alliteration and cavers are kinda close to trolls.

I just read the 4 pages of this post and it really surprises me that someone comes on this forum saying how you can win a new Festool tool and, if you want, you can watch some videos about Festools and some of you guys are complaining!?!

You can learn more about the tools AND win a new tool!  And, like Per stated, you don't have to click if you don't want to.

Welcome Marc, I look forward to your participation on this forum.

Tom.

PS - Nick, you really shouldn't talk that way about Brice!

I couldn't agree more.  Perhaps those complaining will not enter the drawing for the MFK700. ;D

Steve,

So funny and so true.

You can bet yer tuckus.. I entered.

First darn thing I did.

I didn't even have to look up the secret answer.

That should count for something. No?
