The new RO 90 DX multi-mode sander --- What are your questions?

Thanks - I have never had any kind of multi mode sander and never really thought too much about the different motions (glad someone else is that's for sure). Not a big deal or show stopper, but it sounds like the RO 90 with the delta pad would not be a choice for delicate work or would it? Since it is 2 (or 3 or 4) "sanders in one" I was wondering which of the current Festool Delta sanders it emulated: The two Delta Festool sanders I see are:

Deltex DX 93 E: "A versatile sander for difficult and hard-to-reach spots, the Deltex provides excellent sanding results in even the tightest of corners. The Deltex triangular sanding pad and orbital action mean that you can power-sand using the full area of the pad, saving labor and eliminating time-consuming manual sanding in problem areas. The Deltex is the perfect solution when you need those tight spots to look as good as easier to reach areas."

DTS 400 EQ Orbital Sander: "A great all around sander, the DTS 400 is designed for fine sanding small, angular surfaces that are difficult to reach. With a short 5/64" (2 mm) stroke, this sander gives you a super-fine finished surface. Both compact and lightweight (2.4 lbs), the DTS 400 is the ideal sander for working on vertical and overhead surfaces. Step-less variable speed improves working results and the vibration-stop balancing makes your work less tiring."

i would say: the rotex "incorporates" the deltex. the dts400 is a bit larger, but the difference in stroke (2mm) to the rotex (2.6mm) is minimal. i dont think you need any of the two if you own the ro 90 dx.

Thanks mosez, if only I could wait another few weeks I wouldn't need to ask these questions.

Gentlemen, many dealers have already ordered and received their demo tool. You may want to contact your local Festool dealer to see if you can visit their store for a demonstration and get your hands on this killer tool.

Hi Shane. Mine is on order with Bob Marino. I'm just not dealing with delayed gratification and exercising patience. Actually, this is like sports talk on the radio. When the game isn't on people can talk endlessly about every little detail.

Ever since the RO 90 DX was introduced in Europe, I have been lucky to have had many chances to use those under actual shop conditions.

Currently I own nearly all the Festool sanders run by electricity and sold in the USA. Of course I also own many other brands and styles of sanders. Up to using the RO 90 DX I do not remember ever handling a sander smaller than 125mm.

For quite some time I have owned and effectively used both the DTS 400 and the Deltex DX 93. Both of those are marvelous. Before I actually got to spend quality time using the RO 90 DX from what I had read I felt the delta feature of it would not be important to me. However, the reality is that I find the delta feature of the RO 90 DX very effective. My experience, although limited, is that in delta mode, the RO 90 DX actually is easier to control doing rough sanding, that the DTS 400 or the DX 93.

My reputation is making frameless cabinets with heavy solid banding. Another way to think about it is these cabinets are face frame that is exceptionally narrow. Of course my shop makes many face frame cabinets. I really like the way the 90mm round pads work on both the frameless and typical face frames.

Like most of you, my first RO 90 DX is pre-ordered. I dare say we will need more than one in my shop. None of the cabinet makers working for me has handled the RO 90 DX yet, but they all want to give it a go. Our local dealer has promised to phone the minute his demo RO 90 DX arrives. It has been ordered and we assume it is delayed by the weather in Indiana. All my fellows expect to make the short drive to that demo room along with pieces of hardwood.

I've never pre-ordered a Festool before so I'm not sure how it usually works. Is March 1 the day that dealers are allowed to ship out the RO90s? Will pre-ordered tools be shipped from Festool or will the dealers be receiving them and sending them out?

I also forgot to ask if there is much risk that these may become backordered before pre-orders are all filled. Has Festool been receiving the pre-orders from dealers as they come in?

We can ship them on 3/1. I'm planning on shipping from here and hoping not to run out. It's entirely possible that I will run out and they will be back ordered in Indiana. I currently have some OF 1400 Routers on back order and was told today that they may not be here for at least a month.

I know it wouldn't make sense for most people, but since I have an RO90, can a dealer go ahead and ship consumables and accessories before Mar 1?  I'd like to try out the polishing pads and some other abrasives besides Granat.

I know, I know, it's only two weeks.  Patience is not a virtue with which I have been blessed ...  [wink]

Welp, only about a week until the RO 90 launch. We expect demand to be very high. So, I would encourage you to preorder with your dealer if you're considering adding the RO 90 to your stack o' Systainers.

There are several more videos and a review of the RO 90 now thanks to Cliff the Wood Nerd. You can find lots of information and details one our website at http://rotex.festoolusa.com.

I think there was someone who had asked to see the protector set in detail. We didn't have them yet when the question was asked. I'll try to shoot a short video showing them this week and post it.

Any other inquiries?

Ohh, now I'm just someone to you now, I see how it is Shane. [big grin]  I'd love to see a video of the protector set if you can find the time. [thumbs up]

Ummm, I only have one question. How do I get my dealer to give the one with my name on it to me NOW, instead of March 1.
Greatly appreciate all the helpful advice you can put forward on this question Shane ol' buddy. [big grin]

What is this protector set? I don't even know, but I think I must have it, right?  [big grin]

This is the protector set. It consists of three additional edge protectors that are in varying sizes. The idea is to give you three offset sizes for various thicknesses of caulk. They keep you far enough out from the adjacent surface to prevent messing up the bead of caulk.

The video will be forthcoming for "that guy" who asked about it.  [poke]

Actually, I found this in some literature from Germany that may explain the purpose of the protector set better.

They need to make a lower protector aswell for when the edge which normally would be high enough for the protector to hit against is to low and the protector goes over the top and becomes useless.

I have a question... I'm planning on using the RO90 to clean up the trim around our house.  Nothing too taxing; the caulk has attracted a fine layer of dust/gunk buildup, and I'm thinking the sander will do the job well.  Are there polishing accessories for it yet?  More generally, what accessories are the best for this kind of cleanup?

There will be a complete complement of polishing accessories available for the RO 90. You'll find a list below. For polishing applications, you'll need the polishing pad with is actually 80mm rather than 90mm. This is normal so don't be surprised. It's a little confusing because the packaging shows the RAP 80 polisher which is NAINA but will soon be updated from what I understand to also show the RO 90. As for the best thing for your application, I'd check out the sponges. I'd recommend you start with the medium sponge (493849) and give that a try. The waffle type sponges are designed to hold more "stuff" when applying coatings and polishes.
