The shaving cream ripoff.

For many years I used Noxema shaving cream that came in a toothpaste-like tube.  It was my favorite and I always knew when it was nearly empty (unlike the aerosol cans that sometimes surprised me by being empty).

I bought a Gillette version of this.  It has the same feel and density as the old Noxema product.  It appears that only the fragrance and color are different.  I like it.

It came in a plastic tube that stands up on the cap.

After squeezing every drop I could out of the tube, it still felt like there was some product inside.  So I took a pair of scissors and cut the heat seal seam at the end of the tube and used a plastic spoon to scrape out the remainder.  I put that remainder in a 2 ounce disposable condiment container.

The product is sold as 6 fluid ounces.

The amount I scraped out filled the 2 ounce cup about 3/4 of the way.  I would guess about 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 fluid ounces remained in the tube.

So Gillette sold me 6 ounces of shaving cream, but I only bought less than 5 ounces.  About 20% ripped off.

If they packed these in toothpaste tubes, I could extract nearly all of the product.  I don’t think it is an accident that they packed in these heavy duty tubes.

I have about 15 or more shaves left with the scraped out remainder.  I do like this shaving cream and I may continue to use it (remembering to scrape out the remainder each time).  But it offends me that Gillette wanted to rip me off.

My wife regularly buys an assortment of creams in hard plastic pump packs, which means at least 20-40% ends up left inaccessible in the bottle. I've become somewhat of an expert in cutting them open to access the balance so the top can be put back on securely!

I think it is deceptive marketing when they know that the amount of accessible product is significantly less than the amount on the label.

This is especially so since this product could easily be packaged in toothpaste tubes in which almost 100% of the product would be available.

Amusingly, the company I used to work for produced a couple million tube keys each year for Amway.  They were used to squeeze the last bit of toothpaste from the tube.

We continued to sell them the millions for several years even after they had switched to plastic tubes which would not work with the tube keys.

With each order we would laugh and ask, “When are they going to wake up?”  It took them about 5 years to see the light.

Proraso green shaving soap, use a nice sbaving brush and a double edged safety razor.
You can thank me later.

Before I stopped shaving and decided to just keep a beard, I was to a point where I would only shave with water and my multi-blade razor, because it was more effective and caused less razor burn for me.  This thread is like a blast from the past...

My weapon of choice. Let it sit on your face and soften everything up for a few minutes before going into attack mode with your razor. It has aloe vera and eucalyptus oil in it, for that nice tingling 'a supermodel just kissed my cheek' vibe.

I'm with Squall, I hated shaving and used to shave in the shower, until I decided against my missus's wishes to stop shaving and grow a beard! Much, much better! And it only took her around 5-6 years to get used to it, so win-win! ;-)

Shaving in the shower is bad for the earth.  You run hot water for 5+ additional minutes wasting water and fuel.

If you shave after you shower and fill the basin with about a pint of hot water, then all you consume is that one pint, not the 2+ gallons per minute a typical shower flows.  So 16 ounces vs 10+ gallons.

The math does not make sense.  And once you switch to shaving after the shower you won’t miss wasting all that hot water.

I've used a brush and hard soap for ages. A few years ago my favorite hard "shaving soap" disappeared from the marketplace, so I just use the regular bar soap we buy anyway. Works fine and I don't have to buy special stuff.

Story from 40 years ago. A toothpaste company was trying to increase sales. Someone said to increase the size of the hole since most people just looked at the length of the amount squeezed out. Testing established that about 15% more could be added to the volume before people noticed.

Ha, while I still have only one chin, I'll not be growing facial fungus.
If I get to the point where I have a multitude of overlapping chins I'll consider rationalising them back down the the appearance of one large manly superhero chin with a beard.

Or maybe I'll just eat less patties.

You drink it afterwards? Wow. That’s hardcore environmental responsibility right there !!!

Great way to start the day. Just like great tools or a high-end kitchen knife, simply a joy to handle & work with. Manufacturer is awesome as well, my brush lost a small bundle of bristles after +- 5 years of daily use, inquired about it, they said send it in. Received my brush back re-set with bristles after a couple of days and at no charge.

Kind regards,
Oliver

Mind, the shaving cream is smallfry compared to the cost of the multi blade cartridge razors generally advertised by 22 year old football players who've only recently started shaving themselves.
Like they'd know the best setup anyway.

Bleeding fortune for a pack of those razors compared to 100 double edged safety razors which last waaay longer.

Even without all the Big Grins at the bottom, I knew you were joking.  But perhaps some might miss the humor.  So I am providing the full definition including “deplete” which is how I was using “consume”:

How do we measure our net benefit/cost to the earth?
At first I thought there was supposed to be a /sarc or LOL accompanying the above.
If I want to smoke cigars (as an example) am I hurting the earth?
If I don't smoke cigars am I entitled to some earth-helper points?
There are certain groups of people who might think the best thing for the earth is for people to die sooner.

We measure it using our own personal yardstick. One person saving a gallon daily won't make a difference. But a million people doing the same thing certainly will. Each of us with a conscience can only do our best.

Quite aside from saving the earth, is saving your money.

I both shave my face and my scalp.

Typically, I take quick showers—probably about 5 minutes in length.

When I used to shave my scalp and face in the shower my showers were taking (probably) close to 15 minutes.

I pay for my water use (insignificant).  I also pay for my fuel oil consumption (in the winter about $700.00 per month lately).

I have no way to measure how much I save by shaving after the shower.  But if you turn off the lights when you leave a room, and you don’t shave after your shower, it would seem illogical—even hypothetical.

The only possible reason for shaving in the shower is to wash away the blood.  I rarely cut myself shaving, so I don’t consider it a factor.

The quality of the shave is the same. Whenever someone tells me that they shave in the shower, I shake my head.  I believe I have offended some by that shake of the head.  I know my dentist was offended when I said that shaving in the shower was a waste of natural resources (he also shaves his scalp).

So the shaving cream scavenged from the tube and put into a small cup is nearly used up.  So about 40 shaves would have been disposed of if I just squeezed out the last of the shaving cream from the tube.

In fairness, I am more precise on the amount of product I sue when I scoop it out of the small condiment cup.  But an awful waste of product in those plastic tubes.

Well call me a heathen, but I shave AND brush my teeth in the shower.  [popcorn] [popcorn]
