THE ULTIMATE MITER STAND video is finally up on YouTube.

THE ULTIMATE MITERSTAND

The UMS is really that, like its mate THE ULTIMATE WORKBENCH it addresses the needs of professional carpenters.

I have been a finish carpenter for a few decades now and have owned most if not all miter stands on the market: Dewalt's track stand, Bosch's gravity stand, Rousseau's roll around flip stand, and SawHelper. All are very good designs, but not "Ultimate." I wanted it all: easy to move and set up, continuous material support, wide material support, option for short configuration, accurate dependable stop, ability to stock material at saw. Some but not all of these features are met by the commercial options. The UMS offers all of these features and more plus one person can set it up in under 2 minutes.

Ron,

Impressive does not come close to describing this in my opinion!  Thanks for sharing!  Gotta go watch it again!

I like it!

I total agree with the rear fence being off set!   No need at all for it to be inline like you said if anything it can cause problems if the timber is bent.    Its the reason why I HATE I mean HATE the old Festool MFT/kapex stand  I bought that stand before the UG/stand was available I set it up once! Yes only ONCE!  I have never used it since! Waist of money lol!

Cus one of the things I hated was I couldn't remove the rear fence like you showed in your video or slide it across when doing mitre cuts but some reason  people across the pond love it because of the crown stops but that doesn't make up for the massive flaw it has with the rear fence not being removable when setup.   Your bench is also a much better crown stop method as it goes across the saw.

Just a shame its so big it would take up my entire van if it could some how fold flat, its no so much the length but bulk of it really.  If it folded flat removing the cavity you have for storing tools. So while in transport it will be more compact.

Fantastic Ron, very well thought out!  Would pay more than the UG stand for that!

Ron   Again the Ultimate Design for the Miter Saw, Makes me want my Kapex that much more. Both of your designs are awesome

Ron,

After watching for the second and third time, I do have some questions"

1.  I assume that you used 1/2 plywood again as you did with the work table.  Did you design this so that a clamp could be inserted from below?  If so, what is the height dimension of the interior.  The reason I ask, is that I have the used the clamps and quick clamps like you showed for clamping a board as a crown stop and found it annoying to feed the crown around the tall protrusion.

2.  What is the working height that you are using.  I personally use the Kapex on top of a standard MFT and enjoy having the saw higher.  I am thinking about borrowing some ideas and modifying the mounting to attach to a MFT.

Great video too!

Peter,

I used 1/2 plywood, and as you can see much of it is cut away making the stand light and easy to carry. The stand weighs less than 1/2 sheet of 1/2" AC Ply.

The camps work from inside like on the workbench, but barely. If I build another one, I will make the OD 8" instead of 7"

The working height is 36" just like the workbench, but varying the saw horse supports would be easy to customize for both taller and shorter carpenters.

Very clever!!!  Well done.  You've given me several ideas.  Thanks for posting.

Ok, so when are you gonna get these parts cranked out on a CNC so we can by a RTA version?

This thing might actually fit in my truck, and if its not too heavy, I'm in.

Thanks for showing this thing off, really nice work.

Very nice video.

Would you consider sharing the sketchup for this and the work table ?

Ron,

Well done!  I have dreamed of making a stand like that for years.  I just bought the kapex this past friday and my old bench is ready to be tossed.  I made my old one out of 2x10s,  two of them together with material supports on each end.  I built it fast one day in a pinch and years and years later it's still working.  The material supports had to be replaced a few times but the 2x10s lasted and stayed flat.  I like the thought of yours because of the storage below the bench and better support immediately to the left and right of the saw.  I have mine for longer pieces of stock.

I would love to see a step by step drawing of how you made it,  or just a cut sheet.  I think I got the idea of what it looks like,  my question is, can you simply make it to rest on top of regular saw horses.  I have 3 or 4 pair of great white horses that are in my opinion one of the strongest sets of horses out there, and you can put in taller/wider/longer stock into them and create more space for storing the material about to be cut.  One more thing,  how does it not flex being made out of 1/2 ply only?  I would think it flex with the saw's weight in the middle.  I am maybe missing some stiffer structure underneath that keeps it from flexing?

I will be checking back here to see if you have an update with a cut list/material list.

Thanks again!
Dan

Ron, That is a fantastic piece of design and execution! Very well thought out in all aspects.

I finished my Paulk Miter Stand.  Ron, once again, great design and a really nice set of plans to work from!  This stand is awesome!

Hey guys just thought I would show the ultimate miter stand in action. I modified it for a dewalt 12in compound saw.I will be making a second set of extension wings that are shorter for those tight jobs. I purchased all three plans that Ron sells. The workbench is next.

My UMS does not fit in my 6'6" Tundra bed with liner. Wish I had built after I got the truck, have to modify it one of these days.
