thinking about buying the EHL planer

I have one of the smaller bosch planers. It's not a bad tool, I hook it up to my CT22 and it collects all the chips and dust.

I'm thinking about getting the EHL 65, and was wondering from those who have it if your happy with the performance.

I have some solid 6/4 maple closet doors I have to plane down. I know if I use the bosch there's a good chance it will
rip up the end grain when it hits the stiles. The spiral cutter on the EHL looks like it would not have a problem in this area.

I quite often use mine on oak and it does the job perfectly,plus providing i don`t try and take off too much at a time(i never usually go for more than 1mm at a time),it`s pretty much dust free

I go through phases of using mine.
When I need it I need it badly.
I also got the jig where you can invert it and use it like a mini-jointer.
I haven't used this much as the jointing edge is a bit short.
I like the spiral blade a lot - goes a long way to avoiding the annoying chatter marks you normally get with electric planes.
It can also remove a remarkable amount of wood in a single pass; although I tend to use it with small amounts.
It leaves a perfect surface.

I have it, mostly use it for doors and I haven't got a single thing to complain about. Great tool.

The only thing i find annoying at times,is the extraction hose,sometimes i think it would be better if it came straight out of the side,without the bend or even out of the top or back,but maybe that`s just me [scratch chin]

Kind of funny you mention the dust collection. On the bosch the dust port sticks straight out.
It can get a bit annoying, sometimes I wish it was positioned differently. I guess on a hand planer there is no perfect spot
to place the vacuum hose.

Just a thought,seeing as it`s really simple to disconnect the port to swap sides,maybe festool could make different shape and length ports,so you could just swap them over to suit however you`re working [scratch chin]

What you think of the dust port?  I like my EHL nothing not much I can co plain about really the only thing annoys me a little is the elbow connection between the hose and planer as it often comes of when I pull the hose of! 

What makes it more annoying I don't always notice when it happens  and when I come to stick my hose onto another tool I then find the elbow connecting piece of the ehl65 is still attached to the hose and I have packed my planer away and then have to get it back out to put the elbow back.

ha ive had the same problem as jmb

sometimes id like the extraction port at the rear, inline with the cable if found that sometimes the hose pulls/weighs one side down= unsquare cut

i do love the dust free planing tho i make most mess chopping hinges when hanging doors now [big grin]
