So my PC 4 1/5'' trim saw died on me over the summer and I was looking at replacing it with the Mafell KSS300. While I was looking at there saws I looked at the MT55CC also.  I have a Festool TS55REQ but the Mafell seems to be a step above watched some video's It's a  really nice saw and it will work on Festool rails. My question is does anybody in the US have experience with them quality , customer service, and such as we only have one distributor here in the US. On a side note I wish Festool would come up with an angle base like Mafell has for there jigsaw not only do you get the full width of the base but it also works with there circle attachment. Looking for some good advice from guys that actually own and use there tools before I purchase as they as some of there prices make Festool look cheap [eek] Thanks

There is few members on here from the US that use both festool and mafell tools from what I know timberwolf is very good to deal with. The best person to speak to properly is tom gersner. I'm pretty sure he would be happy to answer any questions on the saws and share his experiences

I have the KSS300 and use it for flooring installation.  Mafell quality is top notch and Timberwolf Tools has been good to work with.  The warranty is only one year.  The KSS300 is lightweight, accurate, and has plenty of power for its size.  I have used the parallel guide and it works well too.  I haven't used the flex rail yet.  The dust collection works best when the depth of cut is set to maximum and is on par with the Kapex dust collection.  The only criticism I have is the saw really needs a brake as the blade coasts for about 5 seconds on shutoff.  I have no regrets about purchasing this saw and would do it again.

I have the KSS 400 an really love it in the shop and on site cut quality is superb.
My Kapex stays home more since I got this saw for small trim cuts and whatever
Such a great saw I bought its big bother  KSS 80c with a cut depth of 3.5" with fence sys that's easy as well veristal with furniture grade cut quality.  The fence sys  for the KSS saws are a real innovation for shop an certainly onsite work. [smile] [tongue]

I recently bought the KSS80 and it is an awesome saw. Everything is well designed and power galore. I got it to aid in breaking down larger timber and it compliments my TS75 well. I also have the P1CC jigsaw as well as both Festool versions and a Bosch JS572. The Maffel is the most accurate of the bunch, but I do like my Trion and Carvex  too. Timberwolf is a pleasure to deal with.

I have the P1CC, bought it to replace the Carvex 420 I appeared to be unable to "tune" and get working correctly.

I generally use standard Bosch blades in it, and it absolutely rocks. I sometimes miss the light on the front of the Carvex, but I don't miss the roller wheel and the adjustment after a blade change, not one bit.

It's 3 year warranty in the UK, is it not the same in the States then?

I have the KSS400 as well as some of their larger timber framing saws, the MKS 130, ZXS and Z5. I have a KSS80 on order, it should be here before Christmas. The quality of all the saws is very high. Timberwolf is great to deal with, zero complaints from me.

In general, for the type of work I do, I find Mafell is better on site and Festool is better in the shop. Festool has a much more comprehensive system approach and the abundance of useful accessories have made my small cabinet shop very efficient. The boom arm, MFT and plug-it cords are invaluable in the shop. Switching between saws, sanders and routers with Festool is so seamless.

These same accessories tend to be less useful on site but the long power cords, KSS saw tracks, powerful motors and large cut capacities of the Mafell saws really shine.

We build homes and cotttages from foundation to finishing including plenty of timber work and custom cabinetry, stairs, built-ins etc...

I've been very happy with my Mafell saws. I own the KSS-400, MT-55cc, and P1cc, looking forward to purchasing a Erika 70 and MF-26cc in 2015.

Pros:
First off, Mafell build quality is, at a minimum, on par with Festool, superior in some cases. The tools are extremely well engineered, very well built, and well supported. As mentioned above, they can also make Festool look like a "bargain brand" when it comes to pricing. (The P1cc jigsaw costs $700+, compared to $350 for the Carvex).

There are no NAINA Mafell tools. If it appears on their German website, you can get it in North America.

Mafell tools are fully compatible with Festool D27 and D36 hoses.

Many users have modified their Mafell tools to work with Festool's Plug-It, or a similar Neutrik system.

Mafell manufactures saws from 4" to 16"+, all compatible with their guide rail system.

Cons:
As of now, there are no retail locations for Mafell tools in North America. That means, there is really no window shopping, unless you can find a local contractor who is willing to let you try their tools.

There is no 90 day return policy. Actually, there's really no return policy. If you have a tool shipped to you and you decide you don't like it, you're on the hook for shipping. If you plug in the tool and use it, even once, there is no return.

Some Mafell tools (primarily the larger circular saws and their beam-cutting chainsaw) are not available in 120v, meaning you need a 120v->240v converter.

Warranty. To qualify for the 1-year Mafell warranty, you need to fill out and return the signed and dated warranty card and a copy of the invoice within 30 days of purchase. By signing the warranty card, you are acknowledging that, among other things, you are "a professional user of power tools". Mafell also goes out of their way to say that their tools are "not intended for personal, family or household uses". Basically, they seem to be eschewing the hobby market, and are explicitly marketing themselves to professionals.

Service. While I have had wonderful experiences with the North American distributor for Mafell, they do not have a dedicated service center like Festool does. While Festool generally has a 2 or 3 day turnaround time, there are no such guarantees with Mafell. Basically, you're better off maintaining the tools yourself, ordering parts as needed.

Ultimately, there are pros and cons going with Mafell. For a given class of tool they tend to be the best available, but you need to decide whether it's worth sacrificing the phenomenal support network Festool has established. For myself, I absolutely adore my Festool sanders, routers, Kapex and Domino, but have shifted to primarily Mafell for my portable saws.

There is another forum out there exclusively dealing with Mafell, if you perform a search it shouldn't be too hard to find. I hope this helps!  [smile]

I own a Mafell P1cc and KSS 300. I'm very happy with both and seriously considering the Erika 70. Timberwolf has been great.

A couple of small nits to pick with Tom's review (sorry Tom),

Warranty - I purchased my P1cc from the president of Timberwolf. At that time he asked me to fill in the warranty card and return it, but did say the saw was covered for one year even if I didn't.

Repair - In the same conversation I was told Timberwolf would do any warranty repairs free of charge for the first year. After that they would be happy to do any repairs as needed, but would of course charge accordingly. They did suggest that trouble shooting and ordering parts would likely be the quickest fix.

I don't speak for Timberwolf, If you're concerned about warranty and repair you'll want to discuss it with them.

No worries John!!  [smile] As you said, I've been nothing but pleased with the service from Timberwolf. More than anything, I think we sometimes get a little spoiled with Festool's level of service when it comes to tool repair, and just want to make sure that folks aren't expecting a 2 day turnaround from Timberwolf.

I am like Tom I have ten festool sanders which for me are great except the plug it on the larger ones an easy fix.
And I have 5 festool routers and 5 drills 1 planer 1 jigsaw domino 500 + 700 Ts 75 and a ton of accessiores all do great work for me.
But after buying and using Erika Z5Ec ZSXEc ZH320Ec p1cc DD40P KSS400 KSS80c has taken my shop and onsite work to new levels.
I also own many Bosch routers and other brands of tools all that add to what I can do for my clients. The tools are only one part of the equation its how you deal with the details with whats produce.

Tom - Ya you're right. My concern is that I've heard people, none of whom have any personal experience with Mafell, say that there is no support for the tools after you buy them, and that's simply not true.

r cash - Nice! In the third picture, what's the countertop?

John

I agree John, thanks for pointing that out!  [big grin]

R Cash, I love those handrails! Only had a chance to do a few cable rails, and only one sweeping handrail. Great work!!

John the counter top is Tan oak local to my area here in California
I would like to add to Toms point about festool naina issue. It makes me BATTY hearing about  an seeing online tools you need but because some marketing person and where you live  [unsure] [unsure]. I use to own a USA made powermatic 8" jointer that had a warning label "DONT STICK YOUR FINGERS IN CUTTER HEAD. Since there seems to be some people who need the label so they dont stick there fingers in the cutter head. WE in the states cant get permission to put Of2200 in a cms......  ...
The naina list is long from Festool. Mafell on the other  hand dont sell as many tools but I can buy  a carpenter chainsaw that can cut 15"square with a large exposed blade below the tool seems to me to be more of hazard than a router table or vac table clamp sys.
I could go on an on but this starting to read like a rant. Sorry
[smile]

It's worth noting that the chain beamsaw and 12" bandsaw are available in 120 volt, not just 220. I have both and they work flawlessly.

Thanks a lot for all the great info guys looks like I'm going to be a proud new owner of a Mafell saw [big grin]

R cash - Thanks, hadn't heard of Tanoak before, had to google it. Sounds interesting, do you use it much?

Rollin - Which saw are you thinking about getting first.
