Thoughts on my first few Festools

Hi!

As this forum has helped me with purchasing and other questions, I thought I should comment back with the impressions I've had from testing the tools for some hours now. I'm not experienced with woodworking, but I keep challenging myself with new projects to keep learning!

CTL26 Dust Extractor
Great performance, but not really sure about the value of this one. The only vac I can compare to is a budget 100$ vac I had from before. Performance wise, its not worth the upgrade. What gives it its edge is its integration with the Festool Eco-system. Also has great solutions for filter, good capacity, bags are held nice in place and so on, but thats expected in this price range imo.

Rotex 150
The great and powerful sander. Impressive material removal when using high speeds and rotex mode. What I was most impressed about is the dust collection. I recently sanded the kitchen worktop, and barely any dust hit the floor. So much time saved in cleaning, and great for my lungs. I still struggle with it shooting across the workpiece, but I blame myself for this. Its great to hold and wont shake your arm of like the cheaper brands tend to.

TS 55 REQ
I was blown away with how crisp the cuts are. I was used to a Bosch GKS190, but in fairness I had the standard blade which is pretty rough. Small amount of tearout in the back, but that might be me going too fast. I've cut down some 19mm MDF-sheets (4x8), that I had to do in the living room (couldnt get them down in the basement full size), all the cuts were flawless. Unfortunately I had to rest them on 2"x2" to not cut the floor, and little dust was collected as it got under the sheet.

Next project is getting my take on the MFT-table up and running. Struggling with some tenons for the supports now :) Got the top done with CNC at school (doing my masters in mechanical engineering), with the nice size of 1940mm x 1000mm. Have also bought the side profiles of the MFT/3, and the rests for the guide rail. Hope to have it up and running within next week :) First I need my OF1400 to arrive so I can make more presice tenons than I'm able to with my Bosch POF router at the moment!

Fredrick,

Great to get feedback and thoughts on products that you have used.

I respect your opinions and observations; here in the US all of the normal less expensive shop vacs are extremely loud and don't have variable suction.  Are the lesser expensive vacs in your part of the world similar?

Peter

Hi Peter!

You are right, the cheap one does not have variable suction, and it is a bit louder. I still dont feel that is worth over 8x the price (CTL26 cost me about 820$ here in Norway, and thats without cleaning kit).

Please understand me right, I'm very happy with the vac, and its quality and features are all unmatched by the 100$ vac. Its just a huge step up in the price. Have a 36mm hose coming my way now, and I'll never work without it again :)

The three things I love about Festool DC's ...

1. reliably constant low speed operation
2. noise level
3. the stuff that doesn't come out the other end of the vac

... in other words, refinement.

I was hesitant when I bought my first CT-Mini, I didn't flinch when I later grabbed a CT36 and I won't think twice when I pick up another 36 (but the new auto clean) some time this year.

Tools like the Domino, ROTEX, KAPEX, TS's, etc impress you immediately with the impact they have on you're work - it takes longer for the DC's to impress you with their attributes, but they will [wink]

Kev, unless you are planing on sanding drywall the AC option is redundant, you cant use long life bags and it doesn't have a hepa filter.

Absolutely true. There could be a PLANEX in my future if I decide to do a lot of lining and it's ideal for concrete grinding and concrete and stone cutting ... hence having the AC feature (for what's only about 15% more cost of the standard CT36) could be a good idea.

Plus Locky has an AC - therefore I want one too [mad] [big grin]

I do mean the "new" auto clean model too http://www.festool.com.au/epages/tooltechnic.sf/en_AU/?ObjectPath=/Shops/tooltechnic/Products/584169/SubProducts/584169 not the "current" CT36AC

Not that old Festoolified Protool one in particular, but by the looks of it it seems technically similar to the old Festool CTL E26 AC that I have... only you have to accessorize this new one to attach your systainers to it  [blink]

Does this one come with the Planex tool garage on top? I recall the Planex package being bundled with the Festool CTL E36 AC vac...

Its great if you do concrete dust, but totally redundant when working with wood. But hey, go for it you're probably even worse collector of tools than I am  [embarassed] [tongue]

Yep - Protool in green! The AC on it is supposedly more effective than the Festool variant is/was. No hose garage, no PLANEX holder and no Systainer connector as standard ... but at least it come with a 36mm antistatic hose and cord wrap! The self clean bags it uses are also the same as my existing CT36 when not using the waste bags.

Down under the PLANEX bundle still includes the old CT36L AC with the PLANEX garage - the bundle saves $800, so it makes sense (at least at the moment) to buy the PLANEX bundle and sell the extra CT36 if you have enough DCs already!

If the PLANEX was good for floors and decking I'd probably just grab one regardless of future plans - shame.

Oh Kev, I would need another mortgage to catch up to you in my green collection [scratch chin]
