Today the house i am renovating got broken into. Kitchen appliances got stolen and as a bonus the thieves stumbled on my collection of tools among which many Festools.

1 Domino
2 Systainer full of Domino
3 RAS 180 sander
4 Rotex 150
5 DTS 400 sander
6 Symetric saw
7 CDD with various chucks and bits
8 Centrotec systainer
9 OF 1010 router
10 Sortainer with small hand tools
11 Various systainers with screws, nails ...

Strangely enough, they left behind a TS 75 and a Basis unit with ATF55 mounted.

A couple of Makita and Metabo machines as well.

Not a good day.

Riri,
Where are you located? Trying to fence some of that stuff will really stand out ( a "used" Domino?). We could watch for it on Ebay.
Mike

Riri,

My heart goes out to you.  Just plain nasty.  Let us know if you want us to watch anywhere in particular.

Hope you get this sorted out quickly.

If you happen to hear anything and would like some vengence, I know a guy, who knows a guy, who knows......

Me.

Nothing worse than a thief.

Thanks for yr support. Insurance will not cover as it happened in an empty building. It happened in Brussels but i suspect the tools ( 22 in total ) and half of the kitchen are long gone out of the country by now. They will eventually reappear on ebay. I have given the list with serial n? to Festool.com in case the machines come for repairs in the future. Fortunately my dealer is supporting me and has promised me good deals for the replacing tools. I understand Festool is considering doing something to help me out as well.

hello again,

Now that i have lost the best part of my tools ( save for my beloved saws TS 75 and ATF 55 with Basis setup ) it is a good time to reflect upon which tool do you miss/need the most. I'll be thinking about it and i'll come back.

riri,

First, I'm very sorry to hear about the theft.

I can relate a little because my car (in our driveway) was broken into about a year ago.  They got two pairs of expensive binoculars and my garage door opener control.  It cost about $2,000 USD, and 12 hours of work to buy and replace the garage door opener.  And more time to find and buy new bins.  It was a major hassle and, like you, insurance didn't cover it (depreciation and deductables).

What most people expect to feel after this happens is anger.  What they don't expect to feel is violation and frustration.  "They broke into MY car, stole MY stuff, and will probably get away with it!"  For me, that was the worst.  I hope it hasn't affected you that badly.

I also hope that Festool will take more agressive action in setting up an accesable tool registry.  They already have a tool registration system in place to capture the original tool data.  Making this data available so that police and potential customers of used Festools can quickly determine if a Festool tool is stolen could be very useful in finding and arresting these thieving scum.  It would be very nice to send out the message that stealing Festools is risky. (And a good reason to buy Festool in first place.)  Perhaps not perfect, but it should help.

Regarding your new tools, I'm especially interested in your thinking about:

4 Rotex 150 - Another Rotex 150?
5 DTS 400 sander - This is brand new.  Would you get another one?
6 Symetric saw - Kapex instead or another Symetric?
7 CDD with various chucks and bits - C12?  Wait for the new Festool drills?
8 Centrotec systainer - Buy it again?
9 OF 1010 router - This one?  OF1400?  Another brand?
10 Sortainer with small hand tools - This one?  Any changes?  Make your own insert?

Good luck with your decisions.

Regards,

DAn.

Riri,

I am very sorry to hear of the theft of your tools.

In the US there is a historic president where we hung horse thieves 'cause the horse was basic to sustaining life & making a living.

I'm to the point where if one of these bastards is caught stealing a man's tools that he makes his living by OR stealing one's identity which he works for... then the bastards should be publicly executed.  Two/three years of public executions and the problem would be ended PERIOD.  The way it is now in the US there is no real penalty for these people, and it is the SAME bastards who do this over and over the same ones.

The irony to the above statements is I am basically a liberal in views, its just that I have been ripped off too many times.

I'd check the local Craigslist daily -- then call the police when you see some of your items.  Thieves are amazingly stupid people.

Also check with the local pawn shops, and of course Ebay.

Good luck, friend.  My heart goes out to you.

Dan,

I am not aware of any new drills coming. Do you have infos?

As to the Symmetric/Kapex, i would like to ask Pat and Simou AKA Llap Goch about their views. Considering the saws i still have ;D ( TS 75 and ATF 55 on Basis ) i wonder if i should go again for a Symmetric which is terribly expensive and does extremely well a limited number of tasks or should i go dierctly for the Kapex. As far as plinth work is concerned, i doubt that the Kapex could ever come close to the results and ease obtained with the Symmetric but i like to hear their views since they own both machines. My admiration for the Symmetric is immense. It is a sturdy machine, portable and extremely well engineerd. I already miss it however i am prepared to change my mind.

I cannot afford to sit for too long without any tool so i was planning to go to the shop tomorrow and start buying the indispensable tools. Your views are therefore eagerly awaited. In any event it will be a though day for the wallet! :'(

riri,

I've read a couple of posts about a line of new drills coming and that the batteries won't be compatible with the old drills like my C12.  That's about a much as I know.

I love my C12.  The toughest, lightest, most flexible drill I've ever owned.  The ONLY (modest) downside of my C12 is the battery.    I'd like to see is an LiIon version with maybe a little higher voltage (like 15.6).  I'd happily buy a LiIon battery upgrade for mine, if it was available.

Dan.

p.s., here's a pic of mine in all it's beaten-up state.  Ain't it beautiful?!?  ;D

I vote Kapex. Can you declare the loss? At least the deduction will alow you to get back the cost down the line? Still out of pocket for the new tools, but try and see the bright side, you have a clean slate, you can have bright shiny new models.

*disclaimer- I don't own the symetric, and haven't used it. So maybe I shouldn't have cast a vote.

Hi Riri

Regarding Symetric/Kapex. If I had to choose twixt the two it would be the Symetric by a short straw. I know that most will think me mad but I have had the Symetric for 4 years and it still cuts with total accuracy. It is a better trim/mitre saw than the Kapex though its capacity is limited and it is far more robust. I love the Kapex but I adore the Symetric and its fence. The basis and the TS/ATF saws will do most of what the Kapex will do and at a greater capacity but for accuracy, ease of use, portability and the build strength of a brick sh*t house the Symetric gets my vote.

Again so sorry to hear of your misfortune and our best wishes and good luck in finding some of your tools or the tosser that stole them.

Pat

I appreciate yr input Pat ( and Simou ). I am glad you share my views over the Symmetric and your opinion will certainly tilt the balance in favour of the Symmetric. You have helped me a lot on this one. Thanks. I also thank Eli, i have no doubt that the Kapex is a powerful tool but considering that i have an MFT and a TS 75 and also a Basis unit, and having had the Symmetric for 3 years i know what can this marvellous tool do for me. Trying the Symmetric is quite an experience.

Its a pleasure Riri

Very best of luck tomorrow.

In your honour and in commiseration at your loss, Simou and I have cracked open a bottle of Kriek (or two or three) to toast your success at the Festool dealer tomorrow ;D

Salut

Pat and Simou

It's precedent, not president.  The President is George Bush.  A precedent is something that is meaningful in a symbolic way.

Liberal or not, you are right in the suggested action. Add one thing...put the guys ashed in a Systainer and give to victim.
