They're mitered, but still needed some fill where the nose of the train met the sides (you can see the nose piece in the photo with my son). I came up with a technique that worked surprisingly well;
- I assembled the entire train minus the nose,
- put a whole bunch of wood filler where the gap was
- let it sit for 20 minutes
- then bolted the front of the train on so it made and impression and let it sit for 30 mintues
- removed the front and let it dry fully.
Then when it was dry I put the front back on, sanded the excess off and ended up with a near perfect fit that was still 2 separate pieces.
