TS 60? Or a new TS 55? Need advice.

Here's the situation:

I've got a 10+ year old TS 55 which I've loved but is starting to feel it's age.

I'm looking at the the new TS 60 but I'm wondering whether to go that route or a just get an updated 55.

I'm working mostly with sheet goods and while I'd enjoy the extra depth of cut - it'd be the exception rather than the rule.

My hurdles to the TS 60 are the plug-it (I'd likely swap it and void the warranty as I do a lot of tool swapping on a boom arm) but the bigger issue is the blades. I've accumulated a nice assortment of blades for TS 55 and I'd hate to have to reinvest for new blades  for the odd edge cases.

I hate to not be getting the updated tool but I'm thinking a new TS 55 is the wiser choice.

Am I missing something?

Thanks for any advice.

I guess the question is "what's wrong with the 10 year-old TS55?"

If it's just long in the tooth, you could send it to Festool for a check-over and refresh and get back an almost-new saw.

If it cuts square and straight and you're personally in tune with the saw, it should serve for at least 10 more years with just a set of brushes and some TLC.

We had some downtime so I sent 5 TS-55’s in for overhauls. The newest is 10 years old, the oldest 14 years old. Well worth the cost of brushes, bearings and a few other odds and ends.

If I had to buy another saw it would be the 60 that would become my field service saw.

Honestly, I'd get the current TS55 tuned up, and between the TS 60 and TS 55 FEQ, I'd still go for the 55. Mainly because of the plug-it cord and rving knife. If the TS 60 had the plug it-cord I'd probably be leaning more towards that.

The fact that you are asking for a second (third, fourth, and more) opinion despite all the good reasons that you should get a new TS55 means that the TS60 has certain appeals to you.

Economically, there is little justification for you to change to a TS60 platform, but I suspect, the additional features of the TS60 are a big draw.

Listen to your head, and stay with the TS55, but if you listen to your heart, definitely go for the TS60. A buddy told me the other day that he had come across two used TS55s for sale on the local Kijiji.

Only you can decide head or heart.

That's a tough decision. Having a lot of blades for the TS55 leads me to believe that staying with that is likely the best way to go, which is the main reason I kept mine, when I got the TS60.
I got it for the added depth of cut. I have a greater need than "just occasionally", plus I use it for a living, which makes a difference too.
The TS60 is great, but if you cut mostly sheet goods, there is no real advantage to it.

Just to clarify, the TS60 does have a detachable cord.

Also you can use it on the FSk rails (what the HKC uses)

The TS60 does not have a detachable cord in North America.  It does elsewhere.

What Peter said...and the reason that the TS 60 does not have the PlugIt setup is because it exceeds the specifications in the US for power draw that permit a removable cord, just like the OF2200. Jason Bent just released a very nice video that explains the TS 60 nicely on the 'Tube which includes this topic right at the top of the video since it's one of the most oft-questioned thing about the new tool.

I'm still a bit confused because the TS75 has a higher wattage rating than the TS60 and still has a plug-it.

And yet here we are.

It may change in the future, but none of the confusion that anyone currently has will change the way it is now.

It is likely a UL Listing timeframe issue.  It's quicker to get to market in North America without the Plug-it than with.

Well don't feel like the Lone Ranger...no one else around here can figure it out either. Check out this thread.

One of the guys here purchased a new TS 60 and converted it to plug-it capable.  [cool]

I didn't even click to know that it's about me....LOL
Yes, it is definitely possible, but it will likely void your warranty.

I really don't get why they don't just explain it......with a reasonable answer.
The Amp draw is Bull. Why would the UL listing take any longer than anything else?
