I have had a second Chaos cutting board in the works for a while now. I was never 100% happy with the first one. There were too many repeats of the pattern, even though I saw it starting to happen, but I was in too deep. I did cut a few of the strips apart and move them around, but it's still there. I'm sure it was just me, because I was building it, but I couldn't un-see it. Everyone else loved it, but I was determined to do another one, avoiding it from the beginning.
This time, I started with multiple glue-ups of edge grain strips. I cut and mixed them a few times, then cut one end grain piece from each. Then cut them up again, adding new strips to make up the kerf loss.
Because of other things going on, I would let it sit to thoroughly dry out, for days at a time.
I got it down to what one person called "confetti", then finally flattened it last Saturday.
Yesterday, I did the finger lifting cut-outs, so it just needs final sanding/oiling.
I also glued up some White Oak strips that were left over, from a decorative wall panel, a few weeks ago.
They were 1/2" x 2" so a grid seemed right? It got the flattening treatment yesterday and it now just needing finishing details.
It's nowhere near as wild looking, but a whole lot quicker and waaay less wasteful.
I have some small panels of the Chaos left over, so maybe some more coasters too.
