You are proponents of the free market, and letting private industry "figure it out" - well, for all that chatter, I'm amazed that you haven't connected the two.  But given the lack of understanding between the differences between stocks and bonds, I guess I shouldn't be surprised.  Private industry IS trying to figure it out - by asking the last standing entity (the US Federal governement) that is willing and able, to give them a loan so they can continue ongoing operations without having to destroy what remains of shareholder equity by declaring bankruptcy.  If I were a shareholder of GM, I'd be mad as hell at the notion that they'd just roll over and declare bankruptcy and make my stock worthless, rather than try to do every last thing imaginable to get out of the mess that they're in, and get back on track.

The U.S. Bankruptcy Code

Chapter 7 bankruptcy, liquidation

The bankruptcy court selects an outside trustee who liquidates the assets and distributes the proceeds among claimholders according to

The absolute priority rule:

*Bondholders must be paid in full before shareholders receive any proceeds
*Secured debtholders must be paid before unsecured debtholders
*Senior debtholders must be paid in full before junior debtholders

What did I miss?

And the fact that the lawyers and accountants take priority over any of those folks.  Until they're paid in full nothing gets distributed to any of the people on your list.

So what?  ::)

It doesn't change anything. It's still a loss, right? ;)

The lawyers and accountants are hired for the benefit of the bondholders to recover assets.

If you were a bondholder, you should be happy to be represented in a bankruptcy.

Hmm... oh wait, every president since Bush Sr. has proposed a similar plan and guess what: none of those plans force any changes during their 1st term!  So they are never held accountable (ALL the recent presidents, not just the current one).  The only thing that will increase the mileage of vehicles is when it becomes cost effective for the manufacturers (like the Prius, customers want to buy them).

I dont care at all about this gas milage mandate or whatever it is.

I drive a 3/4 ton GMC Suburban '99  4x4 with a 454 in it.

I bought it to pull my trailers with and thats what this truck does almost every day of its life.

I drive it everywhere no matter how much gas costs.  It is what I want and what I need.

I bought it when gas was on the rise at 3.15 a gallon

I hate people that give you a dirty look because I drive a giant vehicle.

They sure are nice when you show up with all your tools to fix thier house though.

out of curiosity what milage does a 7.5 litre engine do

work trucks dont get dirty looks

if it was a chelsea tractor that WOULD be different ( mums run around to take the kids to school )

have you ever seen those mums drive?

they WANT more room than an artic AND double park in oncomming traffic

I agree.  If you have a need for a large vehicle, it justifies driving it, regardless the fuel efficiency (and up to a point, the cost), but the majority of the people that drive big trucks and SUV's have no real need for them and rarely if ever haul or tow anything.
