USA Trip Happening!!!

I would agree that "Motels" can be very questionable. You will have better luck staying at major chain "Hotels" Like Hampton Inn or Marriott Courtyard. Even the Holiday Inn chain is making a comeback as they are requiring their franchises to refurbish their properties.

I didn't mean to imply that motels would be questionable or should be avoided just because they have that name. A lot of them are very nice, and typically at a lower cost than a hotel. When I was on a 4-month long business trip about 15 years ago, I always tried to find motels to keep the cost down. I never found one that I regretted staying at (on-line or phone reservation from previous city) based on its condition. The only time I ever changed a reservation after reaching the destination city was when I found one cheaper nearby.

Hotels typically have more amenities, such as in-house dining, but if all you need is just someplace to sleep for the night, a motel is probably the more economical choice. On the other hand, if it happens to be a resort town, motels can actually be nicer than even the best hotels.

I have stayed at some nice Motels like the Anglers Inn in Jackson Wy.  And I had to stay in some questionable Motels like the Caboose in  Libby, Montana. But then again there is not much in Libby Mt. Beautiful area just not  a lot of people.

Remember when Motel and Hotels used keys. Will some still do, the image below was taken in 2011.

Bit of an update:

Spent about 8 hours yesterday planning & costing our trip - we were hoping to do LA, San Francisco, Yosemite, and Las Vegas - but decided it was just too long a trip for Kate to do, and the cost was too much (we could just about have done it, but it would have pretty much wiped us out).

So instead, we've booked 7 nights in New York, and we leave in about 6 weeks!

Awesome New York will give ya plenty to do and see. Be sure to get out in the country away from the city Lots to see and do there to.

Enjoy buddy have a good time

Well that's quite a change.  Have fun!

At first I wasn't going to post a followup comment because you said you already booked your reservations. But then I noticed that you had made this decision only yesterday. So I will comment.

In terms of Cost versus Value, I would personally recommend switching your Single destination to Las Vegas as opposed to New York. The cost of staying in Las Vegas will be significantly lower that it will be in New York, and the amount of things to do will be higher. Obviously Kate should have the most important opinion in what she would like to visit. My opinion is based on personally visiting both of those cities and how easy it is to find things to see and do without any advanced degree of planning or thought.

Even at the end of August, the Las Vegas area can be very hot. Someone with compromised health could become uncomfortable very quickly outside during the day.

Where ever you go and whatever you do all that is important is that you enjoy your time together.  NOTHING ELSE MATTERS.
Best wishes , Dave.

Thanks all.

Basically, I left it up to Kate, and out of all the options she preferred NY. It's booked now (and non-refundable!) so NY it is!

Jonny and Kate,

Have a great visit and go to Central Park and have lunch at the Tavern on the Green.  New York has something going on 24 hours a day, enjoy it to the fullest.

Jack

Vegas over New York? You'd have to be loco! I get bored after two days in Vegas...I lived in New York for seven years and it never got tiresome.

Book a show, see the sights, wander through the Park, Soho, the Village. For a tool buzz, visit Tools for Working Wood in Brooklyn. Lots of awesome hand tools and Festools.

Most New York museums have one day a week when they are closed so bear that in mind. The Frick is a great museum, just down from the Met. Also the Cloisters is something special.

Also, tell the cab driver to take you across the bridge into Manhattan and not through the tunnel as you will see the Manhattan skyline when you go. It's amazing when you first see it.

Have a great time. You made an excellent choice.

It would be great of some of our FOg members in that area could meet you and help you out with some of the non-touristy things or the touristy things.  My thoughts extend to dealers.

Glad to see your trip is on.  Wish it was under better circumstances. [sad] [sad] [sad]

I saw your post in another thread.  I see you are coming to New York in September.  I hope that someway, somehow, you can meet even just one Fogger from over here.  When are you coming in?

Peter

Thanks Peter.

We arrive in the evening of 9/3, and fly out the evening of 9/10. I've been in touch with sean at the tool nut, and am hoping to have time to go up there one day (but we've got a lot to fit in!).

Jonny

I've been meaning to respond to this thread and pm you. I live 1hr south of the city in nj. If you want to come on down for the day or dinner let me know. I can pick you up or you can take the train. Plenty of beaches, great food and things to do. Let me know. If you are at all interested let me know, it's no inconvenience to me and I would love to help make a great memory for you and Kate.

Dave

Johnny  If you find the time to make it to the Nut, let me know I would love to take the ride up and shake your hand for sure

Sal

Hope Kate and yourself have a great trip. I can't imagine you making it through to Sydney on your return leg, so I'll just give you both a virtual handshake.

All the best,

Kev

Mr. Round Boy,

I am heading north and will love to meet you.  Hopefully we can do something at the Tool Nut.  Hopefully we can get some of the other NJ / NY / CT contingent there also.  It isn't often that we get a chance to meet a fellow Fogger from the other side of the pond!

Peter
