Using the domino on a cylindrical pedestal.

I am trying to replace the three legs, on a table, that will attach to a cylindrical pedestal.  The legs are not repairable since the client tried to repair them with a staple gun.  The legs were originally attached with screws.  I am planning to attach them with Dominos.  My question is how do I place the Domino mortises into a cylindrical pedestal?  Any suggestion would be welcome.

Thanks,  Jim

Something like this perhaps, made from 3/4" material for rigidity.

Thanks to both suggestions.  I think the "hand rail fence" is too small since the pedestal is 6" in diameter.  I probably will have to make a jig as suggested by Rob.

Thanks again, Jim

I would make a jig that straddles the pedestal and indexes off the end of the pedestal.  this fixture would have how ever many slots cut in that you plan on having in the leg.  You will also want the centerlines drawn for those slots so you can use them to hit your location(s).  I did something similar to this for chair legs that were octagonal.  I had the centers pinned then made the top flat with my centerline marks.  The top kept the legs from spinning and I was able to cut the mortises on two sides with no errors.

Don:

Were your mortises cut across the grain, perpendicular to the pedestal, or with the grain, parallel to the pedestal?  The legs are narrow so I am planning to cut parallel to the length of the pedestal.

Thanks, Jim

Mine were parallel.  I don't think it would matter, just make the platform large enough so the Domino will sit solid.  These chairs were for my grandson so they were very small.
