Veritas Detail Palm Planes, anyone used them? These Little Beauty's

I have some Veritas kit including their Large shoulder plane, which I love to use, but these are a bit different, so I would like any feedback you can offer.

Thanks.

Rob.

I love mine.  I have these, the Ibex versions, and some made by Richard Kell.  The Ibex do the job, but the LV versions are easier to use and adjust.  They're really nicer all of the way around.  The Kell's are truly top-notch, but there's a steep entry fee, wait time, and they are only offered flat or with a 2d radius, not fish bellied or concave like the LV.  It's surprising how much of a dent you can make in a short time with them.

Thanks for the info Dave, as luck would have it I drove past APTC Kent branch today so called in and they let me have a play with the double convex one  [big grin] Somehow I managed to talk myself into buying it  [embarassed] ;D I hope it will be helpful with the handrailing I am due to start. I am sure once I have honed the blade on the Tormek leather wheel it will leave a clean cut across the grain as the factory edge did reasonably well in pine and oak.

Agreed, you shouldn't need more than a bit of honing and you'll be off to the races.  I probably should have asked which project you had in mind before kicking in my 2 cent's worth.

Any time I have ever had reservations about a Lee Valley/Veritas or Lie Nielsen purchase, I've always told myself that I could always sell for nearly, (if not more) than what I paid for them.  That logic has helped my bank account as much as Festool's 30 day return policy.  As soon as I find the LV/LN/Green tool that I'm willing to part with, I'll let you know!

If you do have any issues though, the owner of LV is known to haunt this as well as several other woodworking blogs, and their customer service is second to none.

Project and tool relationship is a bit of a mute point anyway as I often find new and interesting ways of applying tools to jobs they were not entirely designed for!  [eek] So no worries there.  [big grin]

I am not known for selling my tools on either, I have given a few away to promising youngsters after an upgrade, quite karmic as I had a few mentors who did the same for me. [smile]

APTC (Axminster Power Tool Company) have a great reputation for customer service in the UK and they sell LV/LN/Festool and other quality companies tools so there is a huge benefit in dealing with them when buying quality tools. I have been a customer of theirs for over 20 years, so I feel I am doubly protected when purchasing Veritas or Festool kit from them. When companies are helpfully active in forums I think they enhance the reputation of that company greatly....just take this forum as an example [big grin]

It does look sweet, they had one in the display cabinet, along with their squirrel tail detail 'shoulder' plane but not the miniature shoulder plane I would have liked to try. The "squirrel" was not comfortable in my hand and while I was willing to pay the extra cost over the miniature I sadly could not due to that fact, as pretty as it may be  [wink]
