Video of Lie-Nielsen plane manufacturing

Just watched that one last evening, while I was very impressed with the build quality, I was quite surprised at the sight of production workers doing hazardous tasks like pouring molten steel, packing mold sand and abrasive hand cleanup of castings without protective clothing, safety glasses or breathing protection.

Thanks for posting this video.

I have all too many LN planes in my shop. Some, like a block plane, are used a lot while some just are usable art. The surprise plane was the No. 8 jointer plane. I find I use it a lot more than I ever expected.

Thanks for sharing, that would have escaped me otherwise. Watched it on the big screen, well worth it.

Kind regards,
Oliver

[member=61230]pixelated[/member] ...Thanks for that, it was very interesting.  [big grin]

When purchasing just a finished product, it's easy to forget how dirty the metal working process really is.

[member=61230]pixelated[/member] Yes - thanks for sharing. My girlfriend bought me a LN low-angle block plane for my birthday a few years back. It's an absolute jewel of a tool, and one whose cost I could never have justified if I was buying it for myself. Seeing the care which goes into manufacturing was super-interesting and actually quite inspiring. It's so great to guys really care about what they do in this 'down-to-a-price' disposable age. Thanks again, I really enjoyed watching that.

I saw that video the other day on my TV screen (Saturday?) I was surprised by how much of it was done manually. The guy was literally pounding sand by hand.  [big grin] I would have expected to see much more of the process automated or at least in larger batches.

I lost count of the (UK) Health and Safety violations I could see. I guess they must not be in the US, otherwise Lie Nielsen wouldn't make such a good job of documenting them!

I found this video before Christmas.  Then I received a LN Low Angle Block Plane as a present.  It’s a great tool.  Good to see the care that goes into making one.
