Walnut and Steel

absolutely beautiful, i really like the iron butterflies in the last picture

As I read those words I got an instant blast of iron butterfly's in a gadda da vida going through my head [eek]

...

I really like the look of this piece - love to see it in it's new home setting.

It seems quite large, can you share the approximate dimensions? ... and for the fun of it - it's weight [wink]

I really love the character you've introduced with this. It's as if you have "built in" some history with the little quirks you've added! Sean's very lucky on this one - but it's going to look out of place with his red velvet lounge and floral carpet ... best send it down to me in Oz!

Vinnie, that's simply awesome!  Love the finish on the top & the butterflies...so cool!

Wow, almost looks too good to use.  Kinda like it should be in a Boutique hotel.  Roughly how many hours would it take to do that Vin ?
Which chisels do you prefer, the LV or the LN ?

Absolutely love it !

[big grin] that's what i was hoping to happen to somebody.  I actually saw them and it started playing through my head.  One question Vin and you  may have already covered it i just missed it on my skim through, how did you cut the steel? I have a brother that teaches machine tool at a local community college and I get him to cut pieces for me every now and again I may  "need" him to cut something of this sorts sometime soon!!!!

Incredible design and execution! Love seeing your work. In my mind this piece has a nautical flair.

Yes, great work Vinny. I really like all of the metalwork and hardware you used. I'm sure it was worth the wait for Sean.  [thumbs up] [thumbs up]

Ditto. I didn't see that the first time I saw it, but now you mention it...

I really enjoyed seeing the pictures in this thread.  You did a good job building anticipation - conceal and reveal.  I love the design and combination of materials you used, as well as joinery selection.  It seems a little unorthodox to reinforce the mitre with a dovetail key and straight splines of varying size, but I really like the effect.

One change I would have liked to see was a bit of shape to the overall form of the shelf (ballooned, tapered, etc.).

Is the dovetail key that you signed under the table in the middle?  Nice way to sign your work.

Excellent work, and design. I'd put that on a catalog cover....!

Cheers -

Rob

I hope to go grab it this evening from Vin.  Will try to take some snaps of it in it's new home for you guys.

There's another piece coming too.  Let's see if we can get Vin to start a thread with some teaser photos of that bad boy.  Going to be UNIQUE.

We need to make this man famous.  Vin, you know how I feel about your work.  As always, much thanks.  I'll honestly be honored and so proud to have your work in my place.  Been showing off this thread all morning to family n friends.

Thanks all for the kind words.  ...except the nautical comment, now all I see is a pirate ship!  >:(     ;D  That is very funny!

5'x2'x18" probably weighs 100lbs (45kg) or so maybe a tad more.  Heavy enough to feel like furniture.

Thanks, its tough to estimate time on it because I was doing other things and didn't put in full 8 hrs/day on it.  A lot of small details seemed like they took forever (polishing the edge, the inlays, tapping each screw by hand)  Including design and pondering time maybe 100 hrs, but I have no idea.

The LV PM-V11 chisel is killer! (and I'm not just saying that bc Rob Lee posted in the thread)  The handle is very nice (feel in hand and color), the steel got sharp fast and held its edge for a long time.  I will buy another one, probably 1" size.  My only minor complaint is that the bevel part of the chisel has some rough machine marks which can be seen in the photo above.  Its not big deal, but I didn't get the shiny new toy feel I got with LN.  Performance, I think LV takes it.

I had a local place laser cut it for me.  I sent them a CAD file and a couple weeks later I had it.  I ended recutting the dovetail key inlays by hand with a grinder bc I didn't love the shape then pounded them on an anvil with a big hammer.

I really like seeing the natural character of the wood with the rough edges and splits. The shelf reminds me of organ pedals, watch out for kids giving those a stomp.

I was going for an eclectic feel with the different splines and dovetail key.  There are a few other tiny inlays in random spots that I didn't photograph, but I guess Sean can find them.  That piece with my initials is underneath.

I thought about the shelf section for a bit.  The live edges of the top have a curve to them, as does the steel base. I felt that the juxtaposition of these organic forms with geometric shapes introduces a certain tension and contrast to the "natural-ness" of the piece.  Different strokes I guess.

I'm glad you like the photos.

I'll do the side table in this thread too.

No desire to be famous, or even a carpenter... but that's another story.  :P

Vin, your imagination and your results are WAAAYYYYY beyond carpentry.  As some body before me has already mentioned that your work belongs in a museum or (permanent) art gallery, I agree.  Sean is very fortunate to have such a piece on display in his home.

Of course, if it should ever disappear, he should not look my way.  No way ::)

Absolutely beautiful. What a treat to read this thread and look at the photos.
Thanks.

Stunning, Vin! A Viking longship came to mind when I first saw it. I also plumped for the LV 3/8" chisel...and I've yet to re-sharpen it! Superb tool.

Yours is one of the finest pieces of art and furniture I have seen on the FOG.
