Walnut veneer/ solid walnut

Being a novice to finishing, but really trying to improve and trying to clear coat walnut veneer I used two coats of sanding sealer followed by one coat of lacquer it went dark as expected but not as dark as the solid walnut doors and face frames, why is this? By the way if this matters my spray equipment was a CAT pressure pot with a Tomcat gun.

Did you sand the veneers and solids to the same grit with the same process?

A picture of the pieces would help, could be veneer glue issues or simply the grain of the pieces.
