What height kaizen foam?

I have a few generic T-Locs I want to fit some non-Festool tools in with kaizen foam. Never done it before. What height foam would be recommended for a small drill, orbital sander, and biscuit joiner. Going back and forth between the 30mm (~1 1/8") and 57mm (~2 1/2") options and not sure what would work best. Thanks for any input!

I used 30mm, I just want my tool to stay in place and be "neat".  I think if you go a full 2", you are likely to end up having to cut it too deeply and end up wasting space.  This is my Dewalt drill in a SYS II attic held in place with Kaizen foam.  I have enough room for a standard box of twist bits to float between the drill/lid.

I, too, agree that the 1-1/8" is likely the best option. I did use the 2-1/2" version in the bottom of a Sys-4 where my drills/impact are standing up and not lying down. In that case the deeper foam helps to hold them more secure. But for any items laying flat, the thinner stuff has worked best.

I will second what everyone else said. Whenever I have tools laying down I use the thinner foam.

I also have a deep sys 4 with a Sawzall and two drills on end. I used the thin foam that I had but the drills have been falling over so I have to add another layer or go back with the thicker foam.

Thanks again for the quick replies. I got the 30mm size and it worked well, other than I did a crap job tearing out the kaizen foam, despite watching videos ahead of time. But the depth was right  [big grin]

I have a sys-2 I want to put some non-Festool  [scared] tools in!  I have it laid out on the raw systainer and most of the tools are about 2-3/4" high.  That's more that 57mm, so...can you stack the 30mm on the bottom and 57mm on the top and cut out of the 57mm for the tools?

Can you make thicker laminations of that foam?  Yes, you can.  I have used 3m super 77 spray adhesive.

Kaizen foam is thin layers of slightly thermally fused polyethylene foam so it is extremely durable. However, also because it’s polyethylene foam adhesives stick poorly. In this case the glued pieces are captured inside the Systainer so even poorly adhered parts will stay in place. Super 77 is a good choice because it remains flexible.
