What is this edge guide accessory?

First post, please advise if this should be placed elsewhere.  Hello to all.

I bought this edge guide for my OF1400 via Amazon from their UK affiliate.  It arrived in a box, no paperwork at all.  I can't find any description of what the plastic piece is and I figured one of you folks will know.  It appears to be a dust extraction device but I can't imagine where it would attach to the guide or router.

any clues appreciated!

You are correct, it's a dust catcher. It slides/clips on underneath the guide with the dust port facing away from the router and the cup being more underneath the bit itself.

awesome guys, thanks so much.  It seems to me however that if you were routing the edge of the workpiece the cutter would chew up the edge guide!  I'll play with it on some practice pieces and figure it out.

Welcome to the forum!

Generally I would use the edge guide for non-edge routing, but some bits do not have bearings.  Also, loosen the screws that go through the black guide pieces. Then slide them open as much as needed to allow bit clearance. And retighten the screws.

As SRSemenza said, the black plastic pieces can be spread apart to miss the bit, when used directly on the edge, like a rabbet. The advantage of them being able to close is when using the edge guide when the bit doesn't reach the edge, like a groove for a cabinet back. If there is an opening in the edge guide during a cut like that, the bit will pull off line when you get to the end of the board.
