Hi,

are these guys full of crap? They claim to use "Festool HEPA Sander" to remove lead paint from floors. There are no "Festool HEPA Sander", right? And sanding is NOT recommend to remove lead paint even with Festool's high quality dust extraction. Or am I missing something?

"One important machine used to remove lead paint from wood floors is the Festool HEPA Sander, which functions through suctioning lead paint particulates into a Festool Dust Extractor system. This process ensures that the lead paint is removed from the wood floor without causing dust particulates of lead paint to be emitted into the home atmosphere."

Also on their site: "SFW Painting is highly skilled at removing lead paint from floors using the Festool HEPA Sander and Festool HEPA Dust Extractor systems. Used in conjunction, these two HEPA machines provided extremely efficient extraction of all paint particulates from the floor. In essence, the HEPA equipment ensures that no dangerous lead dust particulates are released into the air or settle onto your home surfaces."

As you guessed, there is no Festool HEPA sander.

These guys are probably exaggerating the quality of their tools to attract clients.

I actually contacted Festool about a similar question asked here a while ago.

Alex is correct.  Only the dust extractor itself is HEPA certified.  No hoses.  No sanders.

To be fair, I think this is more about trying to speak to the client on a level that can be widely understood. Sure the sander and the hose aren't technically HEPA - only the extractor itself. But that is a bit of a nuanced detail that could be lost if you try to explain it on a consumer-friendly website/marketing material.

It's like when a wedding photographer advertises that the use the most modern cameras to capture your special day in the best detail possible - but technically the lens has as much to do with the quality of the photo as the camera body.

It’s not a concern of mine, but the last time I read up on it, I was under the impression that you can sand lead away all day with a HEPA dust extractor and without PPE.
