What would you use for finishing hardwood trivets?

I'm currently making trivets out of hardwood for Christmas gifts and I'm planning to finish them with Liberon Finishing Oil and possibly a wax on top.

What made me wonder is that since a trivet are meant to be used under a hot pot wouldn't the wax melt and make a mess  ???

I presume that a pure oil finish wouldn't really mind heat?

As you say, I think wax would make a mess, and isn't necessary anyway.  I've made quite a few cutting boards and use food grade mineral oil.  I've placed hot pans, etc. on these many times without ill effect.  I'd think they need to dry well first.
