What's the best gift you've ever given or received?

So, in the spirit of the season of giving, just curious what others consider the best gift they've given or received.

This time of year, I feel compelled to do random acts of kindness, almost always anonymously. Something that I've had several recent opportunities to do. It brings joy to my heart and I often well up with emotion when I have the chance to see the person's reaction.

For me, the best gift to receive is the thing that I want but just won't buy myself. I've been given trash pickup service as a birthday gift and I really appreciate it because it's not something I would probably pay for myself, but it's a great convenience in the somewhat rural area where I live.

Edit: My favorite thing that I've ever received was my first computer when I was 13 years old. My parents saw my passion for computers and made an investment in my future. Something I'll always be grateful for.

Personalized and handmade gifts are always great too. I'm sure there are many here who are working on those now.

What are yours?

Shane

Traditionally we tend to ask for a range of ideas from each other. In recent years, however, I have asked for cash which with birthdays etc,. I put aside for future tool purchases. This avoids the unwanted presents as illustrated here by Leunig.

We also purchase a goat or similar each year through Oxfam.

But my best present this year will be my returning eysight.

Well, it was about 2 years ago when an incredible bunch of guys and gals on an Internet forum got together and helped out financially when I was going thru cancer treatments.

I just send a picture of what I got to everyone and they pretend it was from them.
Everyone is happy, it is stress free, and I do not end up with things that are not useful...
