Hi wondering if anyone could tell me which festool router would best replace my makita 3612c ???

Purely based on the style , size, and power I would say the OF2200. But it wouldn't surprise me if the OF1400 would do the job for you.  What sort of things are you using the Makita on?

mainly Rebating and mortising green oak as well as cutting mason mitres on kitchen worktops  and some raised panel work

All hand held I take it?  I'm thinking OF2200 for those jobs.

Do you have other smaller routers to compliment the big one?

Seth

The OF2200 is a dream router to use and I highly recommend it.  Plenty of power, ergonomically amazing and great dust collection.  Oh, and this router is smooooth...

I have the OF 2200 and the OF 1400 and both are fantastic and would not disappoint anyone. Unless you are a full time kitchen installer or jumbo woodworker then I would go for the OF 1400.

I went to watch the new Lone Ranger film today - fantastic film and I know that Tonto would advise the use of the OF 1400 !

I have both the 1400 and the 2200 and reach for the 2200 every time. The 1400 just doesn't have the power IMHO

I'd say of2200 if you're use to 3612's handle position. I've got the 1010 which is brilliant but i wouldn't be comfortable with handle position doing heavy work. Find someone with the 1400 and give a workout. I've got two 3612c, one is nearly 20yrs old, the newer one has tooless bush attachment.

Going to my local festool dealer on Saturday spoke to him on phone he's told me to come down and try both machines to see which is preferable. Just try to figure out how to tell the misses when  I arrive home minus  a few hundred £s  and with another power tool

A few hundred £,s.....????

I should say..........!!!!!!!!! You will be lucky to get away with £600.

I have looked at the OF2200 on a few occasions, and even tried it at the Roadshow earlier this year. There is no denying that it is a quality bit of kit, although I do find it a bit top heavy personally, but at nearly DOUBLE the price of the Dewalt DW625EK, I just cannot convince myself what all that extra money is paying for TBH..!!!!!!

Tim.

Probably more than 600 TBH just gonna try as I've never looked at one before, it's got to be well balanced because when I use a router it's usually for two or three full 8 hr days at a time

Hi Tim, I have two 625s, (one is under the CMT badge but the same router) and they do not compare in any way to the quality, precision and pure joy of either the 2200 or 1400.

All I can say is buy one use it and I'm pretty sure you won't be saying anything you have just said.

100% sure of that.

I hear what you are saying Peter, but is the 2200 twice the quality, twice as accurate, will it last twice as long and give you twice the satisfaction that the 625 would give you. As I said, I have serious doubts......!!!!!

Until recently, I would have had the option of buying one and trying it for 30 days, to see for myself where the extra £,s were being spent. But now that Festool UK have reduced that 30 days down to 14 days..... (I think.....?????), I'm not sure if I could give it a proper "Workout" in such a relatively short time.

Tim.

Hi Tim,

I understand - times are tough, not just for Festool and other manufacturers, but for those of us at the coal face. I did let a professional cabinet maker friend borrow my OF2200 and he loved it (I did not let him try the OF1400 as that was a present to me from my daughter!). I must admit that my two 625s are working well, even after 15 + years, but they lack the precision and accuracy of the Festool machines and take a lot longer to set up.
