I haven't built panels out of wood before, usually just used ply so didn't really need to sand much but now I wanna try raised panel stuff. Odds are I will be gluing up panels rather than using really wide stock for a single panel.  Also I'm asking here because if I need more equipment, I'd prefer it to be a Festool and there are just so many choices.

Is it possible to get the job done with just one Festool sander? If so, what would you use and can you tell me the steps you would go through to finish panels with that one tool?

The panels would be in cabinets, and also a few hollow core doors around the house I would like to replace. I am also considering a drum sander or borrowing time on one but would prefer something more portable for other projects down the road.

Thanks....Steve

I have the RS-2e and use it often for panels.  I have a drum sander, but sometimes what I'm working on doesn't really work with the drum sander or would be easier with a hand tool.

RS-2e has a big pad and a bit hefty.  You can put it on the panel and just push it around a little.  It has a normal handle, but also a "palm grip" on the top that I use a lot.  There's a P40 Brilliant available for it which would let you flatten a bit although a hand plane would be more appropriate for that in all honesty.

I used mine last night to sand drawer sides since I didn't want to haul out the drum sander and run through P80-P180 (an aside: drum sanders generally don't oscillate so you'll need to follow up the last drum sander pass with a ROS and the RS-2e is perfect for that).  The large flat pad nearly eliminates the possibility of dishing.

My one and only complaint about the RS-2e is that it has more vibration than the other sanders, but then it has 2-3 times the surface area it's swingin' around.

I have not used the RS2E, but from what I have read that would be a good choice.  I personally have always used 6 inch RO sanders.  I am currently sanding several panels flat with a Rotex, working through the grits and this has done a fine job.  If you want one sander for versatility that can be used for lots of things, this might also be a good choice.  I built a kitchen and used my Bosch 6 inch RO sander with no problem...if your panels are pretty flat after jointing and planing then a regular RO would work.  Careful glue-up is key regardless of the sander you choose.  The ETS/3 or 5 would be good finish sanders.  Others will weigh in I am sure.

just had a look at the rs-2e, does it hook up to the ct22? Didnt see any accessories for dust extraction other than a little hooked on bag

Yes, you can use the turbo bag that comes with it or hook it up to the D27 hose off the CT-22 (which is the exact setup I'm using).  The port on the RS-2e has the same circumference, but is oval shaped likely to fit the turbo bag better (dunno, never used that bag).

Scott's point is good, though, too.  Depending on your current sanding arsenal, a Rotex might be a better fit as it is more versatile.  When you said 'panel' though, I immediately go for the RS-2e.

Definitely look for a shop that might drum sand the panels for you; saves time, more flat, usually doesn't cost much.  Woodworkers' Source by my house would do it as would many other full-service hardwood dealers.
