Is it just me or everyone else too? It always seems the most interesting and super grain and figure is in with the most screwed up section of the piece.

I had my cuts figured out so that I would just barely miss the spots where the corner was gone and it had a couple of large cracks. But when I squared the far end up there was some checking that went into the piece by a couple of inches that I couldn’t see. So rather than just missing the bad spot I’m now about 2 inches into it.

Now I’m re-constructing the corner. We’ll see it it worked when the clamps come off tomorrow. It will still need some extra inlays.  [eek]

Yes, it happens all the time. Usually the most interesting grain is like that because of some stress on the tree. This crazy figure does not "play well" because the grain is unstable. It dries funny, and doesn't respond well to jointers or planers. Cracks, splits, unduations, etc.

Embrace the cracks and fill them with resin?

A viable solution (albeit with plenty of butterflies, too, most likely), but that doesn't feel like Ron to me.

Not saying that he's not capable, but I usually see him making custom wood patches to cover/fix cracks rather than pour epoxy.

See especially the second lamp in this thread:

Can’t actually believe the forum software let [member=75933]luvmytoolz[/member] type the “R” word.  [tongue] [tongue]

More later as I make some progress.  [big grin]

Have to breakout the grinder with the Kutzall disk and do a bit of shaping to get to the final form.

I get it, I used to think of resin as a poor mans liquid filler, but I've been doing a lot with it for a while now and it can actually compliment the timber beautifully. I've been converted! ;-)
