Wood Choice for Exterior Edge Banding

I'm building some doors for my shop based off of the ones in the Fine Home Building article Dress Up a Garage Door with Insulated Carriage Doors. The article calls for the door panel assemblies to be "edge banded" with pieces of 1/2" meranti.

Since I'm planning on a paint finish, I'm wondering if there are other woods that would serve as well or better.

Since noone has answered your question, Ill give it a shot.

Im not sure of the exact. species of wood for you to use.

But keep in mind that even though your painting it , you still have to deal with the variations of the weather.

From what i remember about the puget sound is it has wet cold winters and the summers can be dry and warm.

So your going to have to deal with wood movement. be sure to seal your edge banding on both sides and seal the edges with some sort of sealer after you finish painting.

You should inspect it annually to check the seal and paint

Thanks! The folks at Edensaw Woods recommend ash, so I went with that.

I assume that the glue (Titebond III) on the back side of the edge banding counts as sealing that side. I'm going to start with epoxy on all of the end grain and then paint. Most of the door structure is engineered wood (LSL 2x4 and 2x6 stock for the frame) and marine plywood for the faces. So, I'm hoping that most of the movement will be limited to the edge banding and trim. I'm a bit worried about shearing forces (since I don't think the door slab will move much), so I'm planning on mechanical fasteners for the (12 mm) edge banding.
