Woodpeckers Gap Gauge - New One Time Tool

quick question:
are these the woodpecker version of bridge city tools KM-1 Kerfmaker and TM-1 Tenonmaker?

Not familiar with the Bridge City Tools.  And no metric.  First time in quite some time that's happened with a One Time Tool.

It looks like the large one has both inch and metric on it, is there metric on the other side of the smaller one?

Sean, there is a metric scale on at least one of the two pieces.

Maybe there also a metric scale on the back of the smaller piece.

Sean, thanks for showing us the back and, you are correct, there is no metric gauge on the smaller piece.  I wonder why they put it on one and not on the other.

Not sure.  Like I said, this really is a first, at least in my experience, for Woodpeckers.

that's not the back he's showing--it's the same side flipped around.  i just looked at the announcement email from woodpeckers and clicking on one of the pics takes you to more description and a video like they usually do.  on that page they indicate that BOTH tools have inches AND metric although the other side is not shown either

I think they should stop calling it "one times tools " they should call it " First Run or First Batch "

But, the label 'One Time' is designed to create an urgency in the mind of the potential buyer.  It's a good marketing ploy.

BTW, this is not even a "first time" for this one.  I got a small one last time around.  Let me check tonight to see if there is a metric scale on the back side.  Someone could also reach out to Woodpecker's directly through Rich Hummel, since there really is no guarentee that even if mine has a metric scale from the last batch that the new batch will have this.

"Fixed Run Tool" would probably be accurate. They are going to make a fixed number this time and may or may not make more in the future. Now if I could just find a good word to give me an "A" between the "F" and the "R"...

Not really.  The kerfmaker works by offseting the width of a cut by the kerf of the tool.  The gap gauge does not take into account any kerfs.  It really just translates an inside measurement (width of a mortise) to an outside measurement (width of a tenon) or the reverse.

A couple of points..
First, the tools seem to be a knockoff of Bridge City's Kerfmaker, though somewhat less capable and more expensive.

Second, the tools are most precise when applied directly to the task, e.g. as shown in the advert, compare a dado stack to the gap locked in on the tool.  If you measure the gap on the tool and then measure the width of the stack, you have two additional opportunities for error.  No need to measure, its just whatever the size of one piece, you want to match it in the mating piece.

true, they're missing the third sliding component that sets the kerf.  but at first glance i thought the small one could be a good substitute since bctw also runs limited run batches and they're not always available.  i was surprised though that the dealer did not seem to know some basic specs on the tools he's offered for order.  but since it has been mentioned that they are best used as direct measurement transfer tools then the scales, whether inches or metric, don't have much of a useful function.

I like my Bridge City KM-1. No offense to Woodpecker, but they couldn't pull my my KM-1 from my dead lifeless grip!  The thing is super simple to use and is sexy as hell.

I do like the price on the woodpecker item.

Cheers. Bryan.

I feel poor this year.  I have orders placed for two other "One Time Tools".  I think I'll get this one the next time it is a OTT ...

My wife and I are doing a Viking River Cruise next month to celebrate our 40th anniversary, and our daughter is getting married in July.  And I'm ready to build 10 feet of cabinets for our study remodel, and really need that Domino!  Wow, this year is looking like it will be going into the record books for expenditures!
