Woodpeckers OTT Dowel Press

LV makes a dowel maker that is a better design and may even be a few bucks cheaper.  The other option is using a lathe.

They need a die for extruding dominos.

That is a fascinating idea for perhaps Seneca to make an aftermarket product (or Woodpeckers themselves to offer additional dies).

They showed only a glimpse of the resulting dowel and the surface on it was pretty bad. Looking at the die shape and the process I would not expect good results, especially if grain on your stock isn't quite straight.
P.S. Perhaps a serrated die edge combined with turning action from the crank would work better.

Received the email this morning and thought it was April 1. The ROI on this tool will take a long time considering all it does is make a round dowel from a squared one. To each his own.

I have multiple WP tools which aid me everyday, but sometimes I wonder if they are just laughing at us while they design certain tools.
I agree mostly, but sometimes you need a dowel to fit snugly, and the dowels you buy at the box stores are crap in that respect.  At least with a tool like this, you have a chance of getting a well=sized dowel.  I have the Lie-Nielsen tool and use it very seldom, but when I need it, it does the job.

If you don't need many pieces I prefer this:
The jig can be simplified.

"Start with pieces whittled close to your desired diameter, chamfered at the leading end, and hammer it through the appropriate hole for perfectly sized dowels."

Lie-Nielsen Dowel Plate

Lie Nielsen and Lee Valley have comparable options for much, much cheaper. Lee Valley you can add metric or imperial dies -- the only difference is that you have to hammer the dowel through verses using an ACME thread. Cool design and concept, but for the number of projects I need special dowels I can use my plate. For dowels in projects, there are several sources of quality dowels that are inexpensive and it would not be time effective to make your own in my opinion.

I'm with the Lie-Nielsen dowel plate crowd, for $55 , it can't be beat and I've gotten excellent results with it. Use a small block plane to knock down the edges of a square peg and hammer it through the dowel plate with a wooden mallet.  It's a snap.

When i saw the Woodpecker email, I suddenly had the urge for some homemade apple pie!

Cheers. Bryan.

I ordered 4.

One for Maple.  One for Oak.  One for Walnut and one for the heck of it.......

It's only $400 plus $80 for a set of metric inserts.  So I ordered 4 imperial sets and 4 sets of the metric inserts.

Somebody has to buy this crazy Woodpecker crap or else they would go out of business.  If they go out of business, who else would offer a "ONE TIME TOOL" more than once ? ? ?

[tongue]    [eek]
