Four years ago, I disassembled a discarded daycare play equipment constructed with southern yellow pine. Recently, the pine was ripped to rough width with a TS55, jointed, planed, and glued-up to approximate thickness. After the glue set, the parts were squared on a joiner and planer. Off to the Kapex to cut to length, then open mortises were cut with the Domino XL and Domino.
There are only two different assemblies: legs and stretchers. Each leg has two horizontal and two vertical pieces, and there are four stretchers. Two 12mm x 100mm dominos were inserted in a vertical orientation into the ends of each vertical piece, and two 10mm x 50mm dominos were inserted into each end of the stretchers. The dominos in the stretchers are not glued, but serve to orient the placement of the stretchers to the legs and to prevent the pine from twisting in the future.
The large bench in the background is the model I patterned.
After sanding and applying a finish, the assemblies will be joined with lag screws from the legs into the stretchers. A surplus top, 2.25" x 24" x 96", will be installed and then the top will be assessed for refinishing.
