Domishims measure

3/4" Domishim measures 5.9mm
1/2" Domishim measures 9.15mm

In use, both require the fence to be set at 15mm to work correctly.

So...

3/4" = 19.05mm => center line at 9.525mm. 15mm fence shimmed by 5.90mm is 9.10mm
1/2" = 12.70mm => center line at 6.350mm. 15mm fence shimmed by 9.15mm is 5.85mm

I guess that means the nominal 3/4" material needs to be 9.10mm * 2 = 18.2mm thick, and 1/2" is 5.85 * 2 = 11.7mm

I'll have to check what I've got the garage to see if that's right (assuming my dodgy maths, and understanding of a tool I haven't used yet, are accurate).

I now have both but started with the 700 and if only had one it would be the 700. I use both a lot and on structural joinery, doors, windows etc it has to be the 700, but even on smaller sections the 700 allows a plunged "through" mortice and this can be really useful. Geoff

I assume they must be "right" for most 1/2" and 3/4" sheet stock, otherwise they wouldn't sell. Didn't get chance to get into the garage today, but will hopefully have time to look tomorrow.

Yea, the idea of the plunged though mortice appeals to me - perhaps then using contrasting wood for a homemade tenon for a decorative look.

I have both Dominos

I had the 500 for a while before the 700 was released.

I used my 500 all the time but since I bought the 700 I haven't used my 500 as much.

Thing is my work varies a lot so it is hard to tell if its because of the. 700 why I have started using the 500 less. 

Another factor which I think has made me use the domino 500 less is my home built pocket jig machine I built myself.

So what I am getting at is you need everything! LoL

I love both domino machines big and small they both come in on specific jobs.  If I had to pick just one it would be a struggle to decide but if I had to because it was mater of life and death it would have to be the domino XL I would pick.

I've started using the DF-700 on a project; to create a wooden fence/cover for our bathroom radiator (to stop our recently mobile little one from burning herself on it). All good so far, but unfortunately the Seneca bit adapter hasn't turned up yet. AFAIU the plate is for the DF-500, and you use it upside down. The shims are for the DF-700. Both make it easier to centre on 1/2" and 3/4" material, but are designed for the ergonomics of the respective tools. I suspect that using the DF-700 upside down with a plate might be cumbersome.

Thanks Sploo. That makes sense. I suppose the DF700 would be a bit unwieldy. I have both machines so would be unlikely to use the larger machine on the thinner stock. Thanks for clearing it up though. Geoff
